Hi, A few questions here, any help really appreciated. I'm doing a rebuild and struggling with some items. Series 3 Diesel 1978

1/ My engine is suffix A and painted green (thinking replaced at some point) and currently has a mashed 3 stud exhaust manifold (598104) that i'd like to replace, will a 4 stud (536514) fit the same and aside from a different exhaust not need any other adaptations?

2/ How can i work out which piston rings i require for my engine?

3/ My flywheel housing is also pretty mashed, with a hole smashed behind the slave cyl hole and starter motor mounting snapped off, is there any real difference between a petrol and a diesel housing.

manifold just bolts up
you have to check what size the pistons are ie standard ,+10 ,+20,+30,etc rings need to be gapped by trying in the bore first to ensure they are correct often they need the ends filing to fit
petrol and diesel flywheel housings arent interchangeable, petrol has 2 starter motor securing bolts ,diesel 3
 
piston sizes are nominal ie often vary above and below given size ,a piston is measured at 90 degrees to gudgeon pin at bottom of skirt, standard size is 3.562 inches,+10 3.572 etc

Another question, is the manifold much different from diesel to petrol as I have found someone listing 598473 as suitable for Diesel when the part no is petrol?
 
Pleae try and avoid ****part rings, I bought plus 0.030" rings and when gapped they had nearly 0.050" gap I ended up using plus 0.040" rings and filing the ends slightly to achieve the correct gap. The engine runs well now and no smoke !
 
Have measured up and was reading 3.572 in or thereabouts so have ordered 010 rings from paddocks, picture shows them as Mahle so hopefully that's what I'll get.
 
Be sure to Hone/Glazebreak the bores before fitting your new rings. I know some folk poo/poo the idea going on about modern oils not glazing bores but I find it essential.
 
Have you got much of a ridge at the top of the bore...the diesel exhaust manifold that points down it very hard to come by now...is the one you want the typs that had a side exit???

Hi Nick,
It has a bottom exit but I need to replace the exhaust too so a side exit one would do fine but both seem either hard to come by or crazy expensive. Not much of a ridge in my bores.
 
I bought a 2.5n/a on ebay for around £30...supposed to fit...not got the bevel to match the top of the pipe but a bit of work with a file should sort that...they are brand new as well...get one while you can.
