£20k on tools to fix a land rover?!!?!!?!!?!!!?!?
You havin a laugh, or just lettin everybody know you like expensive tools?
a £200 quid set of tools will do nearly everything you need on a Landy, unless you're plannin on makin the parts for it yourself...

20K's worth of tools maybe over a space of 30 years of accquiring them a bit of a time, You'll need an adjustable spanner, a cracker bar, and maybe a hammer, most things on a Land Rover can be fixed with them if you have no tools, Land Rover's are simple cars.

But seriously just a couple of hundred quid spent at Halfords maybe would get you a good set of tools, plus a lifetime garuntee.

Snap-on would always be the best buy for quality but we don't all have that money.

A 300TDI Disco would possibly be an option
Engines are good ( most ), i had a 300tdi with 124k on the clock, engine wise it sweet, just keep it serviced
For 2k you should be able to pick up a decent one
Just check for rust, front and back inner arches, boot floor, sills etc
Spend as much as you can on the initial purchase to find a rust free one
and it will cost less in the long run

how much is a good torque wrench, angle gauge, compression and leak down testers, angle grinder, drill, multimeter, punches, chisels, measuring instruments ....... and that's assuming the landy doesn't have a brain that needs interrogating

£200 would get a reasonable set of metric sockets and a tin to store them in - you'd not even be able to change a wheel bearing with that

Go on then Sean, enlighten me.... what must I spend £20,000 on in order to keep a land rover 300tdi serviced...

This should be interesting

Even with such a special engine, i find it hard to justify £20k on tools, unless they were the tools for your trade.

I have had landys for over 10 years now, and when I take into account the things like engine hoists and stands, air tools and compressors and various decent socket and spanner sets, I have easily spent over 10k on tools, and I don't use the really expensive stuff either, so 20k for a set of tools to do everything you will ever need to on a landy is not unrealistic at all.

"must" ? - who said you must spend 20K

someone has already indicated how easy it is to accumulate a small fortunes worth of tools over not so many years

a think a much more interesting read would be how you'd service a landy with just a £200 socket set

I think you're all taking this too personal...

In all circumstances, it's not hard to blow 20K on tools, you could spend that easily. I think I've got a few grand of tools sat in my tool box, bearing in mind it's all snap-on but it's not a big tool box either.

As I've said before you look in most garages of people who fix there own cars, they've got some money's worth but it's all acquired over time.

Land Rover's are simple vehicles to work, there are ways around doing things by the book so not all special tools are needed in my opinion. Couple hundred quid spent wisely on certain tools will get you by.

If you're new to all this then get to Halfords it's a lifetime garuntee and they do have some good deals on from time to time. Given the quality's not as good as the big bucks gear but if you're not in a mechanical trade then there's no need to fork out that kind of Money on Snap-on, Blue Point or Falcon etc...
