Hello All,

Going to fit new waterpump tomorrow to my LSE 4.2 and was just wondering if I need to re-fit the viscous fan afterwoods? The range rover has already got two electric fans infront of the radiator which come on straight away when starting engine. I am not sure if they are original fitment to the range rover or not. I thought they may be for the air con but dont switch on/off with it.

Any advice appreciated, many thanks.

No there is nothing wrong with the viscous fan, Ive heard that without it you can gain a few more miles to the gallon and was just wondering if the two electric fans were sufficient to cool engine without it ?

cheers.

nope, leave the viscous off, you will get more mpg and have more power too, keep your eye on the temp gauge, it may rise slightly and make sure you keep the water topped up ;)

hello mate the 2 electric fans are the air con fans and should`nt come on as soon as you start up , unless the wiring has been played with or you have a fault switch either way i could do with a dose of looking at because the 2 fans running right away will over cool your engine , its ok to leave the viscouse fan off but as yella says you`ll need to keep an eye on the temp gauge , the engine driven fan is not required at all when driving along as the air flow through the radiator is more than suffiecent to keep it cool , but if you get stuck in traffic or leave it idleing for any lenght of time it WILL overheat i hope this helps

As said, you CAN run without the fan; but that's a 3.9+ sized engine, renouned for dropping liners etc; I've just been looking at a 3.9 with a nice slipped liner..............
I think I'd keep it, JUST for the piece of mind of knowing that there was ONE less pottential cause of a foul up.
Land rover DIDN'T put it thee for fun; they MAY have had ideas about desert temperatures, or that it was only a few quid on a gazzillion quid car..... etc etc....... But!?!
No. Sorry. Not for my money, matey!

i completely agree with teflon, (is this teflons torque i wonder?)
i had a 3.9 classic and i removed the viscous fan, did see temp rise at lights and then found out the electric fans where air con, i decided the cost of repairing engine wasn't going to be covered by money saved on fuel not turning viscous fan.
i wouldn't chance it, fit a proper electric fan if you don't want viscous.

Are you looking to connection with some-one you have come accross on another forum, with a large and rambling webby full of accumulated wisdom; expouned upon at length?
If so, click the profile; check out the joned date and have a look at the home page....... answer, nicked from little remembered Hanah-Barbera cartoon of the '70's, is it Henry, the mild, mannered, Janitor........

cant get the homepage link to work mr teflon!
curiouse; mind you I think may be an old link with a redirect jump code in it; firewall software may not like it; sites' been a bit neglected of late TBH, I started trying to give it a revamp, but was thwarted by first a hard drive going plop, then another; then my memory modules going wobbly, and eventually my mother board frying! Mind you, was an eight year old Pentium II! Upshot was I gave up! Lost so much 'stuff' and had so many different versions on the back-ups that didn't match, realised I'd be better off starting over from scratch!
So its a bit flakey; but try:-
Teflon`s Torque - THE Land Rover Enthusiasts Site!
or
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/williams73/Teflons/
but if you want a 'sneak-peek' at what I hope it will look like when I have got it hammered into some sort of shape; try;
Teflon's Torque - Adventures - Contents
But please note that's still in 'Demo' so it's got lots of notes to myself over it to remind me where I have to go look at things; and dead links where I haven't yet got pages written!
Once I've got it all to a standard, I'll go back and look at my 'web-presence' and start promoting the site again, and update the links in my forum profile's and putting the link-gif back in my sigs.

Just curiouse; but are you using Netscape explorer or fire fox?
Just uploaded some new files, which might have caused a glitch; but didn't expect any-one to be trying to access them at this hour!
Does sneak-peak work for you?
should work in most browsers; there was a problem with non IE browsers on the 'old' stuff, which was why I was trying to rework it all.

I took the viscous fan off my 3.9 RRC as some previous bright spark had fitted a pre-serpentine engine blade to the viscous and it was blowing air out through the rad instead of sucking air in causing overheating at slower road speeds (but not at idle and high speed!). 3.9s are v.rare in Ireland (our LPG is ony 15cents cheaper than petrol so its all diesel here I'm afraid) so i haven't been able to get a new blade since. I did a bit of investigating to get the aircon fans to come on instead.
The fans are activated in two ways: 1. by switching on the aircon switch at the dash and 2. they come on automaticlly irrespective of the aircon switch if water temp is higher than 95 deg.
There is a thermoswitch just above the thermostat housing with a two prong connector on it. In your case, assuming you don't have the aircon switch on, this thermoswitch is faulty and broken in the on position or someone has bridged it like I did until I got a new switch. My one was broken in the off position so i just bridged it to have ithe fans on permanently. This resulted in the engine running cold so is not a good long term solution. I fitted the new switch and the RR has run happily enough without the viscous fan (gained about 2mpg to 14) but you do have to watch it and I haven't towed with it since removal.
