I got my Nato hitch fitted yesterday and collected my Sankey trailer today. Haven't had a good chance to look all round it yet as it was dark when I collected it - but it tows well and was a good price, so I'm happy that there's nothing horribly wrong with it.

Now to my question! I have my spare wheel on the rear door (swing away carrier), and getting the trailer hooked up was a complete nightmare. Specifically, lowering and raising the jockey wheel, as when the towing eye was over the pintle, the handle for the jockey wheel can't be turned as the spare wheel is in the way. If I attach the trailer with the door open, I then can't close it because the jockey wheel handle is in the way.

So what do other people do? Remove the spare wheel before fitting the trailer?

How about fitting an extra stay on the front of the trailer, so you can raise the jockey wheel before hitching?

spare on the back is always a pain for towing.......had problems even with lower trailers on a drop down hitch so my spare went and lived on the bonnet long before i got my Sankey

If you open the door a bit, you can access the hitch without fouling the jockey wheel (as it remains the right side of the door). That's the way I do it....dc

cut the mount off the swing away and weld it back on higher up. Thats what I am going to do with mine as my 255/85 is nearly touching the hitch!

Hmmm... that's a possibility. My tyre isn't as big as yours (265/75) but it is still in the way of the jockey wheel. Really don't want to put this spare on the bonnet.

Where did you get your nato hitch by the way? All the ones I've seen are cheap crap copies.

ebay. There's plenty of genuine ones on there too - they're usually scruffy looking, but a bit of time with the old wire brush, followed by a lick of paint and mine has come out looking really nice. Didn't stay that way for long though - hooking the trailer up saw to that!

i know this is from 2011 it mite help someone else i got a MK3 Sankey Swivel for my Sankey narrow track so i could fold the jockey wheel inline with the chassis like these for example (not my photos)

I have one of those sat on the bench awaiting fitting but on the mk3 the tube it fits in is welded to the chassis rail. I am looking at bolting a tube to the existing jockey wheel bracket for the swivel bracket to mount into but have not yet got around to it. How did you fit yours, do you have some photos of your actual setup?
