I've got a slightly tatty 1994 300tdi Discovery with a tail-light problem.

The two tail lights mounted in the rear bumper are fine. The two mounted in the main lighting cluster in the rear corners aren't and don't come on with the lighting switch set to either side lights or headlights. Front headlights and sidelights are fine, too.

I took one of the clusters out to have a closer look today and according to my multimeter there's no voltage getting to it. I've checked all the fuses are ok.

The circuit diagram in the Haynes 'Book of Lies' doesn't seem to include these but the wiring is colour-coded Red/Orange or Red/Yellow.

Anyone run into this problem before?

some models dint av side lites in the pillar just the bumper you wil not have indicators either in there but u will in he bumper.in the pillar you wil have brake reverse fog lights

check the bulb in the tail lamp. if its single filament then its most likely you've got the version where only bumper lights are tail lights.

if its a double filament then you have a wiring issue.

Ah! Maybe that's what they are then, fog lights. Must confess I didn't think to try that.

Been a few years since I've had a Disco and can't remember what that had.

Thanks.

I don't think even land rover remember what they did with the rear lights on disco. I've seen so many different version. Even 2 of the same year can b different. As said check if you got double element.

Thanks, I will. It's a bugger of a job getting to the bulbs though because of the two seats in the rear restricting access to the panel to only midgets.

Undo the two upper seat retaining screws, seat drops down and makes it a lot less fiddly (I've not got big hands but still struggle to gain access). Incidentally my 94' Disco has brake, reverse & fog lights in the pillars.

Hmmm... OK thanks people, I now have fog lights :)

Interestingly though, when I pulled the light cluster I found a double filament bulb and holder in there.

From the bottom up I appear to have brake, reverse, and fog/? (Top one is the dual fil.)

When I look at the connections to the dual filament holder two of them are grounded and the third clearly feeds the supply for the fog light. Odd.

I would have expected the rear and brake lights to have been fitted with a dual fil bulb and the fogs to have been single fil.

It's certainly starting to look that way.

If I can get power to it then I'm confident I can modify the light cluster so that the spare filament in the fog lights socket will operate as a rear light.

buy sum 200tdi lights they have indicators in them n wen plugd in the work as the shud also sidelight in bumper take a feed off that and run it up to lite cluster theres ya power to the dual element bulb

There are two styles of rear lamp units fitted to the D1.. early 95MY & the 98MY on the left and the 200 series and the later 95MY, 96MY & 97MY on the right.

True, so long as the bumper lights are working, but they're not very bright.

Where we live is very remote and I'd feel much happier knowing there was a bit more light coming out the back end in case someone is coming along on auto-pilot.

I suppose I could just leave the fogs on but it's a bit anti-social.
