Here's a bit more, which should make it clearer...

Some of the wire colours have changed between model years, but the functions of those wires haven't.

Here's a page from RAVE for the 300TDi Defender (I haven't got one for earlier, but it's more-or-less the same) -

Pin 1 - Black/Red - Loops back into switch (for flashing warning lamp in switch)
Pin 2 - Light Green/Brown - Indicator Switch
Pin 3 - Green/Red - LH Indicators
Pin 4 - Green/White - RH Indicators
Pin 5 - Light Green - Flasher
Pin 6 - Not used
Pin 7 - Purple (depending on age/spec. - could be Green) - Permanent Live
Pin 8 - Green (depending on age/spec. - could be Purple) - Ignition Switched Live



Here's a page from RAVE for the 2002 Defender, showing which colour wires go to which pins on the Connector (the diagram is of the Face of the Connector, i.e. the front, not the cable-entry side) -

Thanks Paul you have been a grate help with this one I'll give it a go tomorow tryed the one off the PDF but did not work so I'll try this one and let you no
 
right i have gone over and over itand now i have the indicator on all the time but the stem is doing nothing think its time to call some one in on her

Hello Paul,

Me again (Sorry), so whilst doing my research I came across your explanation (which is fantastic and just what I needed), however there is just one point I’m slightly confused about;

Loom (200tdi Autosparks) No1 pin black and red just hanging out the plug with spade connector (female) attached.

TD5 plug No.8 black and red for the warning lamp on dash.

Do they connect together?? As I can’t see the connection point

Hi Tom,

The Black/Red from pin-1 on the old connector, loops round to a 4.8mm spade on the side of the old switch, which is for the flashing indicator in the switch.

There's another 4.8mm spade on the other side of the switch, for the indicator's earth (which should also be in your Autosparks loom).

On pre-TD5 Defenders the loop of Black/Red cable only goes to the side of the hazard switch.

On early TD5 Defenders, this Black/Red cable also goes to the instrument warning lights for the hazard warning symbol in them.

As you have a 200Tdi loom, and are fitting a TD5 instrument pack, you will need to take the (Black/Red) wire from pin-8 on the td5 hazard switch, to pin-9 on the 20-way warning lights connector.

So, you don't need the Black/Red (pin-1) and corresponding earth (Black) on the 200Tdi loom's hazard switch connections, and can leave them unconnected.
