Freelanders have no more problems then a defender or a dicovery. and if its a td5 version of the later then they are probably more reliable.

I would buy a late one with service history and check the clutch pedal isnt write at the bottom. like said on here check out the freelander forum.

Thanks one and all. As someone who is married to a 03 Alfa Romeo GTV owner, we know all about reliability. Surely a Freelander can't be as bad as that!?!?!?!

Finaly question thus far - does a TD4 auto have a cambelt - have read somewhere that they have a chain not a belt but can't find definitive answer. If it has a cambelt - what is the recommended interval for changing?
Have searched this forum but can't find an answer to this one!

No cambelt, excellent BMW engine. I am delighted with my auto, does everything I want but if I was changing I would buy Nissan or Suzuki.

i like my auto too..
had three 3dr, a petrol
and two TD4's....no real problems, only back door seal on all three and the one i got now (51reg td4 GS auto) is the best so far.
try and get the best warranty deal available for total piece of mind and you cant go wrong wi a freelander..
BUT FFS dont get a petrol or we'll all come round and give you a shoeing

got a td4 auto, best work vehicle I've owned, well pleased with it. Sure it's a little heavy and wallowy at times, but if you want fantastic handling, a 4x4 int the thing to buy.
That said, in the cold and wet, most of our front wheel drive cars/vans scrabble for grip on a roundabout for example. The freelander never even gives you the idea it might be thinking about sliding
