Only thing done last night was the installation of the new oil cooler - the old one wasn't leaking but was an original and these things have major problems in the Transits. The new cooler is an O/E from Landrover and now comes with a canister filter but I also needed a bolt kit and a revised hose as the outlet has moved about 20mm

What was the initial reason for stripping the head?

Looking at getting a 2011 2.4 110 next week and on the fence regarding this engine, some say good, some say bad.

Tbh most lr engines have their faults n quirks, but these bastards look a little more complex than building a 200tdi with a socket set and a hammer...
 
The gasket failed - fluid loss. It occurred just after I had a different problem with the running - I decided to replace the injectors - only to find trey needed programmed. When I went to the dealer it turned out the old ones were over fueling. One thing lead to another and I am now about £1000 into a repair! But I do like things done in a certain way so fingers crossed all will be good when back together next week

The injectors are programmable but needs a specialist - if they over fuel they can blow the head gasket of worse crack the piston crown. I removed the pistons to check and all was ok with mine thank god. If you look at the picture you can see the failure clearly on the gasket. I also sent the pump away for testing as it was easy to do so at this stage. I also feel that the gasket alone could have been done and may have been ok but as I have listed the 90 for sale I want to make sure all is ok.
I like the TD5 Fender also it may not have the power of the Puma but it's a great engine and doesn't give any hassle. The Puma engine has more power but it's the torque that is needed in a Fender so both motors are great for that. The gearbox in the Puma don't really give any issues but I find them all a little 'notchy' in to gear, this could be due to the 6 speed. The gearbox operates fine if driven as it should be - I may be a little quick on gear change.
What are you hoping to do with the 110? Is it a family ride - work vehicle or a toy? I was really surprised by the different comfy level compared to a 90! I have had a few 90's and only 1 110 but that was 25 Year ago! In all fairness it helped me improve my welding skills!!

It'll become a camping truck, roof tent, cooker and set up for days away with the missus to horse shows ( towing a horse trailer ) as well as weekends away with the 4 dogs in the back on the moors and during the summer, upto Scotland for a few weeks. We have other vehicles for work, so this one will only be used recreationally.

Off road, not unless i need to, greenlaning is about as appealing as sitting in a traffic jam, the speeds are similar and i really don't see the point of it unless you're on a horse or motorbike ;)

Price wise for the Utility XS 2011 model, it's a good one, if the dealership supply a good warranty then i will be happier, otherwise i may look for a late TD5 around the same price with an XS spec. Getting older means enjoying the comforts a little more ;)

Hi @wammers - on reassembly of the motor I am noticing a fair amount of hard oily residue that has set on the intake manifold - I have tried to clean out as much as possible but there are some hard to reach ( impossible places) I will post a picture - I was wondering if I should replace the inlet manifold as this build up may have an effect on air flow! The only wY to remove would be with a solvent but as the manifold is a plastic moulding that is bonded together and I fear the solvent may attack the joint

thats from the egr ,it has hot exhaust gasses going through it ,paraffin will remove it

Any update?

I'm looking at doing the timing chain on mine being a high mileage engine.

Are you replacing yours whilst everything is out so to speak?
