Hi all, I was just checking the propshafts and the front propshaft turns a little bit by hand where as the rear one doesn't move at all, is that because the rear is held with the handbrake?

Also how much play is acceptable on the UJ's as the very back one has about a couple of mill of play?

One last question, I was going to grease the props with my new grease gun but it won't attach to the grease nipples and it wont pump any grease. Should it be connected to a nipple to pump???

Thanks all

1. yes

2. dont really know, but it needs to move a little

3. grease gun should work without being attached. clean the nipple up good and push it on square.

Thanks Griff, the grease gun handle just pumps but the grease stays in the cartridge. I have tried several things but still does nothing, also the nipple on the rear UJ is loose and the UjJ is covered in grease. I assume that isn't the way its meant to be.

1. Wot Griffy sed

2. Don't agree with Griffy. There has to be play in it yes but it should be so small you can't feel it. If you let it go to long the UJ could end up busting.

3. Some grease guns have an adjustable nipple clamp, Ooooooooooooo nurse, on the end have a look to see if the very end is adjustable. From what you say it sounds as if you've run out of grease or theres an airlock in the grease. is there a bleed nipple on the back of the nozzle trigger bit?

So I take it a couple of mill is a bit excessive then? I have looked in Haynes and it seems a simple enough job but it got 3 spanners so is there something to make it harder than it sounds? The grease gun is quite simple and I have just put a new cartridge in the gun but I can't seem to get it to work. Do I need to push the plunger at the bottom through by hand first to get it started? I am pretty sure it doesn't have a bleed nipple and the very end screws on but I don't think its adjustable.

Thanks Grunt

Cuppla mill is tooo much, though there not going to disintegrate in the next few days. I'd definitely keep an eye on them and do them as soon as is you can. There not hard to do, getting the old ones out is the worst bit, a long thin punch is handy to get down the sides of the old ones.

Grease gun sounds like the new un's with a cartridge. it's probly not got the cartridge in right try pratting about with the plunger thing.

Three spanners in the manual???? Omg about 5 mins ago i took my prop out to change uj joints and it took about 10 mins, really easy to do just gives you a bad neck and wrist cos its in a crap position, Unless you have a pit? where as im led on the drive

think i need to change mine an' all , i was changing all me diff and transfer box oils on sat , & greased both props , the front prop i can move bout inch and a bit , probably why i'm getting bit of vibration underneath 'eh

Hi, I am completly new to working on cars so I am a bit unsure what jobs are easy. Thanks for the help. Is the UJ joint just the cross bit in the yoke or is it the whole assembley at the end of the prop?

Lamriska can is twist your front prop or is it play in the UJ's?

I don't think so that is what mine does and I aksed at the start of this thread and it is because the handbrake holds the rear prop solid. If you want to check the UJ's see if there is any play in the joints at the end. I wish I could explain it better but I am just new to this so I am not sure how to check everything. If you get a haynes it is quite helpful.

s'all new to me n'all dopey , my grease gun done exactly the same thing , just push it right up hard on the nipple & pump , i think grunt already said that ,

Try pumping yeh grease gun first! you should get a little "grease worm" out,if not you have a problem with yeh gun:(

If you put it on the nipple (pushing hard) and it just splurts out all over the place yeh nipples blocked!!!:(

If you can't get it on the nipple try moving vehicle a few feet for better access.

After a few pumps it should spew out of all 4 bearing cups-that's good:)

Make sure you chock the wheels and take the handbrake off to check the rear prop, I've just looked at mine and the rear uj on the rear prop is hanging out.
