Prop should be OK, just change the UJ .. An hour tops ... if you stop for a cuppa ... ;)

I thought about changing the UJ's however there is also a lot of play in the splines and the thing is very corroded. I can imagine that it's the original part .. so as a complete one from Paddocks is only 50 quid or so ... i'm going that route ...

They are great but make sure you get the ones with greasable uj’s. I have had two of them. One came with sealed for life uj’s which failed after about 12 months. Replaced with greasable ones and not been a problem since. The second one came supplied with greasable ones and is still going strong.

Thanks for the tip there CR, i'll check on that ...
Sadly She wasn't well looked after at all by the previous owner, I have done a lot to it (timing chain, head gasket, rebuild carb, 123 ignition and so on ) He off roaded it for a season but after kissing a tree (front right wing is crumpled and the roof corner) decided that a Defender was better suited so sold it to me for under 5grand (with a Swiss MOT - which means no oil leaks!!)
I am taking part in the Swiss 4x4 Navigation championships this year ( off road routes are on gravel or field ways.. ) so i need to get this done

That UJ looks dryer than an Arab's sandal. I replaced my props with Hardy Spicer branded ones a couple of years back. They were't much dearer than Britpart at the time and have grease nipples to play with in all the right places.

Guys,
So finally took delivery of the new prop shaft + fitting tool ( plus a new front bumper & door mirrors ).
Firstly I have to say the fitting tool is a pain in the arse when it comes to the front end of the prop shaft, no matter at what angle we turned the prop it was a right fiddle.. however on the rear it was great.

The drive down the mountain valley this morning to the station was adream .. no more rattle scrape, bump n baging, no phantom tick tock noises from the gear box and a much lower sound from the rear axle, one thing i did find was that the castle-ated nut on the output shaft was very very loose. So much so that with the split pin removed i was able to take it off by hand.. so i did this up not to a torque setting but by eye and feel.

Front bumper looks great, although I have to drill new holes for the towing eyes & the door mirrors took around 10 minutes each ( the hinges were already the right type, so I have 2 spares if anyone is looking for such)

One last thing about Paddocks, this time they sent me 3 times too many nuts n bolts compared to last time where i had 8 bolts and only 7 nuts!! so that was nice. I have also had a lot of agro with UPS in the past with them charging me extra, not for weight but volume - having paid the flat £20 charge per package sometimes having to pay anything upwards of another £90.
Paddocks are now using DPD .. soooo much better, no xtra charge and 2 days earlier than promised.

Take care folks
Blessing from up the Alp
Simon
