I've got both prop shafts off my 2A so I can replace both diff pinion seals. Both props seem good, no UJ wobble and no noticeable spline wear. The gaitor is missing from one and needs replacing on the other.

What's the trick for unscrewing the cap on the short half so I can separate the props and put a new gaitor on? The threads are weathered enough to be a bit seized and I can't get a grip on them with anything. Any old hands have a trick?

Cheers.

That is just the way they came when new, Guess the rear is not as vulnerable to dirt. LR should have carried on fitting them on 90 / 110 's fronts as the plastic cap thing was/is rubbish at keeping the crap out.

The new ones last about a month. After the last one I put the new one on and only tightened the small dia, left the large one with a cable tie just tight enough to seal (ish) but loose enough to slip. Its done 2 years now.

I got the dust caps off with some degreaser heat and gloves for grip. Cheers.

Seems it's not worth replacing the gaitor. The one on the front prop is starting to go but it's not actually split yet. Been on there 12 years so far.. probably more life in it than one of the new £3 if this thread is right. I might just leave that one on there then. Or, Rob, are you saying you got a cheap one to last two years by not doing it up too tight and using a cable tie one end? You said "I put the new one on"?

Yes, I think it was the 3rd one. Two had not made it from one MOT to the next so faced with the choice of leaving it off or trying something different I opted to put the next one on with only the small end tight and set the larger dia to just slide. I got the idea from my Merc where the suspension gaiters are designed like that and seem to last 20 years. So far its actually done 3 years.

This thread reminded me to order a new gaitor, ordered Fri , just arrived , Genuine one for £5 with PAB closing there’s decent bits at great prices
