Hi guys, does anybody know if you can wire a proper temperature gauge up on my p38 diesel? i don't trust the normal one on the dashboard and its costing me loads of money to try and get the thing back on the road, so i need to be confident with the all new cooling system thats being fitted, because if this overheats again it will be getting a little treat of a gallon of petrol and a box of matches to play with! also has anybody tried wrapping the exhaust manifold, turbo and downpipe in that heat insulating tape you can buy to help keep the engine bay temps down?:cool::cool::cool::cool:

I should think the Turbo would be running hot enough already without insulating it to retain more heat and transferring it to the intercooler which is in front of the radiator so therefore transferring more hot air for a marginal cooling system already.

Try the search button :eek: , I am in the process of doing the same. I have a BT OBD2 which works with my phone and it reads coolent temp, not sure how accurate that is.

I would like to have a way to set audio alarm if tempature goes above a certain set temperature. I have recently fixed a overheat problem and it plays my mind that the temp gauge will go red even though I have already drove it many many miles in traffic and hottest day this year so far in traffic :crazy_driver:

Just fit my aircon fans mod and add a sounder:)
 
Maplin remote temperature gauges are dirt cheap. mount the sensor on any metal area sticking the sensor into a blob of liquid metal. Tis what I use in my Imp.
 
You can retrofit a coolant gauge to the header tank, I have seen it done on another forum. Either that or get one off ebay that fits in the top hose and have a mechanical gauge on the dash in a pod
 
I'm going to wrap the exhaust manifold and downpipe but leave the turbo uncovered, have already carried out your fan mods Datatek and they work a treat, but i know i will be paranoid about the engine temp as i don't trust the standard gauge and if i ever manage to get this back on the road i want no more grief from the cooling system, anybody know where the coolant temp sensor is? is it located on the side of the cylinder head? i'm also thinking of rigging up a cold air feed from behind the bumper up to the turbo housing to try and keep the under bonnet temperature down, any thoughts on this would be welcome:tea::tea:

You using it for ploughing or something? The underbonnet temperatures are not a problem, it was designed to run in much hotter temperatures than you will ever see in the UK. Wrapping the manifold and down pipe is a waste of time and may cause you more problems.
 
I stand to be corrected but would wrapping the manifolds not increase the chances of them cracking due to localised heat?

It will certainly increase the heat range they are exposed to, increase head temperature, turbo temperature etc turbo's get hot enough as standard without adding to the heat.
