It's only the one bank though. What mileage is it?
Maybe that one liner av gone, is common. I'd take it to the boys that did the head for you and show them. If it had run a lot with steamy head it will be w*nked

Yeah, the other bank seems ok, one plug came out from cylinder 4, less black than the others but I am not seeing any wetness. Not like number 5 which is running more as a water pump than air compressor. It's done 110k, I overheated it once on the drive back but for no more than 30 seconds til I pulled over, I sensed it coming when the heating went cold. Obviously I can't make any guarantees as to what the PO had done.

Liners you'd hear..

My thoughts exactly, I did give it a good work out in sport mode and it ran better and sounded better than in the lower rpm. All the liners are at the same height, not marks or dents in the fire ring. No knocking or banging when cold or warm from the engine.

Oh, and I did see 1.7 mpg on the dash, may be something to do with the huge amounts of fuel it's throwing in to keep itself running :D
 
Another thing i can think of is weak threads that have pulled from the block deck and is not allowing sufficient compression on the head gasket

Or bad head gaskets that aren't up to the job.. o_O:D

Ran the tap through and there was no swarf when it came out, cleaned, de greased and blown out with air. They may have weakened and snapped though as you say.

Better not be the bloody head gasket! :D

Just kidding, ten bolt, centre working outwards at diagonals. Same as RAVE and the instructions that came with the head gasket.
 
I've heard rumours of putting the inlet manifold on before tightening up. @MrGorsky might be able to enlighten us?
 
There is enough material for it to just catch my fingernail if I ran my thumb nail from liner to block.

Regardless you'd hear them, they drop when they're loose, they clatter and knock when loose, so if it's quiet then you're theoretically ok... :D

Perhaps the gaskets are just shyte quality? :eek::D

How many of those brand gaskets have you gone through now? :D

Yeah they are all the same. I've got some Dye Pen lying around so might take the head off and check it after checking for flatness.

The head gasket is two different makes with two different sets of bolts.

Could be a bad bolts, bad head gasket etc etc.

Try running a Straight edge across the head surface, and the block deck have a good look around cyl 5 .

have a look at the headgasket when you pull it off, look for any obvious signs of blowing..

I'm sure you'll get there J !!!

My shed's floor is so uneven all the 'boxes and shelves have to have different length legs :D

It was a pen at some point in it's working days so the floor was finest Cornish grade concrete, bout 2 inch thick and very Sandy :D

I've already got the man cave sign ready to go in. That isn't me in that photo btw, I have more hair
