ah looks like you need to buy some stuff from me...

you def need mud tyres... i'm selling some

you could also do with a removable tow bar... selling one of those too ;)

Even got a solid boot floor! Although, it's in a disco at present!

Sedimenter will be getting a clean tomorrow then, will need to wait and get some new seals before it goes back on though.

Ha Bump what type of tyres are you selling, i'm half interested.

Update,

As it's the festive period and being a young bachelor i've been spending far to much money on booze and going out. However i have managed to get a little bit of work done in between the spectacular hangovers.

After cleaning the sedimentor (and covering a large portion of the drive in s**t and diesel), rust treating and painting the chassis she looks like this.

After researching what to use to treat the chassis I still couldn't make my mind up so in the end I used Hammerite Kurust and a tin of there finest black paint.

The next job was to salvage the seat belt mount which I managed to shear off a bolt in. After a failed attempt at drilling it out (drilled through wonkey) i ended up having to grind the captive nut out of the back of the mount and re-drilling the pin on the through bolt so i can could get a larger split through it. One hour, three drill bits later and a lot of swearing i had a usable seatbelt mount again.

I have also managed to salvage the cross members which have been taken back to bare metal and are in the process of being rust treated/painted.

Next job it to think about how best to weld it back together!

Ben

I was just going to go straight ahead with the waxoyl, is there any significant advantage over using Shultz before?

You may struggle getting anything to stick to hammerite, all my waxoyl has pretty much disappeared now after using hammerite first!

Might have to do a little research into this, just bought some waxoyl but no point in slappin it on if its not gunna stick. Might be why some people use Shultz instead.

Bit of an Update,

As the festive period took its tole on the old bank account there hasn't been much progress in welding Big Blue up yet. Since the last update i've only extended the breathers from axles, gear and t box. Currently looking at extending the tank and timing case.

Anyhow as i was depressed at seeing the landy like this

I thought i needed to do something that would contribute to getting it back on the road! And what better way to start than playing with my mates welder. Cleaned up some steel that was roughly the right thickness (1.5mm) i will be patching the landy up with and off i went.

First played around getting it set up, aiming for decent penetration and a nice sizzling sound. Which resulted in this.

Then i had a pop at actually trying to weld neatly which resulted in this.

Don't no if i'm doing something wrong but i settled for doing individual tack welds instead of seam welds because it just warped the metal. Takes longer filling in the gaps but it looked half alright when ground it back down.

A little more practice and ill be 100% confident in my ability to burn holes through the landy :D

Just a pic of the welder i used.

It's good to get practice in before hand as I'm sure you're aware. I would recommend pushing the weld as it will help get rid of the heat on the thinner plate.

Also try and practice on overlapping welds first as butt welds are the hardest to get right

Nothing like jumping in it at the deep end lol. Practice is key, i dread to think what a mess i would have made if i'd have just got stuck in. Hopefully have another crack tomorrow evening so i'll try overlapping welds to.

Thin plate will warp got to do small sections to allow it to cool. Also could try changing up your technique and once it starts flowing good move allong faster

Cheers fort he advice lads. When i was doing the seams getting it all set up i was pushing it (going from left to right). Was a doing the welds a couple of inches at a time so thats probably why, will do 15-20mm next time and let it cool hopefully that should help.

Third pic from the bottom showing the reverse of your welds is showing a lack of
Penetration, your welds below should look nearly the same as those above.
Try holding the torch in position for a little longer before you move, or move it slower.

Try short half inch welds a few inch apart, then let cool and go back and fill in the gaps. Should help with the warping of the panels.

Update!

Well, after managing to loose my phone with some of my progress pics on i now have boot floor installed. Had a stroke of luck with work also as i landed on a few weeks of night shifts close to home.

Time to let what pics i have do the talking.

After removing the rear quarter panel (which was an absolute f*ck as i did it wrong and have consequently had a buy a new one) this is what i found behind it :(

I then set about chopping out the rot and rebuilding the top of the wheel arch as the previous owner had let it completely rust through but decided to patch it with wire mesh and filler. The before pic was on the lost phone however after a bit of time welding and shaping (whacking the sh*t out of it) this was the end result.

Not the prettiest but it's a damn site better than what was there :p

Purchased a couple of panels from YRM which i was very happy with and started remaking the edges for the boot panel. The boot panel i bought off a mate for 20quid which i thought was a bargain as it's an original not a wafer thin ebay special. Unfortunately no pics of that stage. Once the boot was riveted in i tackled the ns inner quarter panel. Chopped out all the bad bits and patched up with some left over steel and the remainder of the one of the YRM panels.

From the outside

Saved all but one of the seat belt mount holes however this was for the rear fold away seats which aren't going back in so i wasn't to fussed.

After seam sealing, priming, painting and stone chipping the outside currently looks like this.

Inside all painted ready for rear seats to go back in.

Also gave the boot checker plate door card a spray in black

Another rear quarter panel is on its way so that will get fitted at the weekend then its time use the damn thing!

Cheers Ben
