Hi all I have decided to bite the bullet and change the engine in my p38 2.5 diesel are the any things I need to look out for and what sort of probs am I likely to come across

If its a P38 it is a 2.5 litre BMW engine and the removal of the engine is in RAVE

Why should it not do that. Unless you are fitting one out of a Omega or BMW in which case the injection pump will need changing.

ok have just called the chat who is supplying the engine and its an E34 bmw engine and its come out of a Rover 75

Might be the same but I always hear it referred to as an M51 engine. Normally people transplant them from an Omega or 325 TDS.

unless the number on the fuel pump ends 994 it'll need swapping over, or the top of the pump at least.

what's up with the current engine?

current engine is sluggish overheating and has a few parts need replacing which makes it cheaper to buy a low millage alternative

Just seen your other thread.

Overheating a tad worrying if waterpump, thermostat and viscous all working.

sluggish could be lift pump or a sensor or something silly.

replacement engine a gamble unless you can find a genuine low mileage well looked after one. See OldPilots thread and offer him 500 for tge car. It is worth that easily.

Rover 75s are not fitted with M51 engines. Which is what you need.

Sluggish....check lift pump, clean out intercooler and check MAP sensor and pipe.....if post 99 MY, check EGR

The M51 was not fitted to the Rover 75 from the factory....the M47 I4 was..!!!!

If that is from a R75...it has been retrofitted.

Guessing that's a later one. Doesn't look quite the same as mine. Will the engine EMS be the same if he has the earlier one like mine?

I can only go on what the guy said and that it was an e34 and it was taken from a rover 75 the engine looks very similar to mine are there numbers on the engine I can get the man to check? I thought the rover 75 were only 2l fiesel

The E34 was a 5'er from BMW...they did use the M51 in the 525td model.

I wonder if the Engine is originally from an E34 5'er, and was transplanted into a R75 with an old M47 Diesel engine.....as an upgrade.

If it is not a Range Rover derived M51, you will need to swap the fuel injection pump over as they used different electronics. The basic engine layout should be the same.

Just note: If yours is a post 99 model (with EGR) you will need to use an engine that has EGR fitted.
