I need some help with the rear of my 3 door Freelander. Yesterday with no warning the rear windows winder mechanism just packed in. I first noticed it when I went to open the back door and the window failed to drop the normal half inch automatically to allow the door to open. Tried the switch on the centre console, no joy. Then I discovered that the rear windscreen wiper wouldn't work either. Interestingly when I lock the car with the remote I now get a single beep from the horn which didn't use to happen before. I'm not a great believer in coincidences and I can't help thinking the two problems are probably related in some way. Could there be a sensor that has failed and the CPU thinks the back door is still open and therefore won't let either the back window winder or wiper work? I'm new to Land Rovers so any help appreciated.

Sounds like you are right about the car thinking the back door is still open.

It could be that there is a bad earth and that is why nothing is working with the back door in general. I would look at wires and connections to the back door to see if there is any damage. If you have a multi meter you could check if there is any power to any electrical parts, or check if you have an earth on the door.

Does the number plate light work? Or the high level brake light?

If nothing is working at all it could be due to an earth fault.

Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that although it might be a case of the wiper not working as it isnt seeing the door shut signal from the latch, so stopping the wiper working and activating the mislock tone. It might also be a case of the car not seeing the park signal from the wiper motor, so its disabling the rear window regulator. If the regulator isnt exactly into its shut position, this would also cause the mislock tone.

You say that the taildoor window wont work off the switch on the centre console, but if you hold the unlock plip button down for 3+seconds can you hear the regulator trying to work at all? You could also try putting the key into the external taildoor switch and holding that rotated clockwise to see if you can get any movement from the regulator or any sound from it.

If you can hear it trying to work , your regulator might be broken and the window jammed in the up position. If it seems inhibited , its more likely to be wiper park signal missing i think, but you'd have to check there isnt a fault on the regulator wiring/fuse/relay first.

Taildoor panel comes off really easilly, just 4 screws and pull from the bottom to gain access.

its the stoopid encoder in the motor . . . . . .so disconnect battery [make sure you have radio code] leave disconnect fer bout 30 secs and reconnect [tailgate window should drop fully open] will be able to open door at this point close door and manually drive it up fully and try again, if it still fails or is intermittent then its a new motor and a reet pig to fit :):):) hope this helps you Earthling . . . . . . .

Thanks again for all the suggestions so far. Disconnected the battery and gone through recalibration process and slight change detected. Can now hear the rear windscreen motor trying to work when I push the button on the console to open it manually. But now getting a double "beep" from the dashboard somewhere when I do. No longer getting a horn beep when I lock the car which had started to happen. Rear wiper still not working at all. Beginning to think it's the rear wiper regulator not sending the signal to say it's parked. What do you think and how easy is this to replace?

Did the tail gate window drive down on reconnection of batterie ?. . . . .

hi it could be the wires on your back screen and because it is not fully up the wiper will not work hope this helps

PROBLEM SOLVED. It was indeed the tailgate window winder regulator mechanism. A cable had snapped; the CCU clearly thought the back window was open so disabled the rear wiper (and heated rear screen); bought a replacement kit off Ebay (£70); fitted it without any trouble at all and problem now solved. Thanks for all your suggestions everyone.

I have exactly the same problem. What is the name of the kit in ebay?

I have the exact same problems, only thing working on my tailgate is the number plate lights and the third centre brake light. Only got ours a few weeks ago, sadly the person I brought it from has put a extra rubber seal on the glass because it was leaking as window never worked when she brought it. Just to cape, mine is a 99 Freelander 3 dr, wiper, rear washer and rear de-mister and of course window its self is not working, when the button on the centre console is pressed a warning noise goes off (beep) and the door open warning on driver display does not go out. Last of all when the car is locked the horn sounds once. Please can someone come up with what to do, as this is doing my head in.

do you mean the encoder in the window motor or wiper,my wiper stopped today and when i opened the back door window went all way down and would not come up,got it up by force and after playing about with it got it up and down a couple times with console switch. now no up or down but motor is whirring

cables broked
get a new regulator. Wipers are tied to that as is the car alarm

I had same problem, changed the wiper motor, which did work as and when, once the motor was replaced, took me half hour, tailgate window and wiper works as it should.

Hope my contribution is of use to you
