Hi Guys,

I have just bought a Disco 1 3.9 V8i, this is on a "S" 1998 running on LPG. In general the cars is in good condition with 71000 gen miles.

I am new to the world of 4x4's and Land Rover's although I have driven a few landy's through the years!

I have just had the MOT done, it got through with not much needing done, I was happy in general, when I picked the car up it was a bit smoky(white) on start up, the car had sat for 3 weeks as I'd been offshore working so I though that would be the case, over the next few days I noticed the white smoke if I was sitting in traffic it would start again when pulling away, it is ok on the open road, nothing like in the town at times, I am using a lot off oil and the water level dropped a bit as well, there is a lack of power when on the open road when when I get a steep hill.

It was also said when I picked it up that it is only starting on 6 cyl's when cold and that it would be good to change the plugs.

I can overhaul a 20 ton marine engine but don't have a clue where I'm going here, any help or advice would be great, I already love this car and can only love it more when get back to health.

Thanks in advance guys!

Zeb

Give it a good service first, plugs leads, distributor can and rotor arm

thats not gonna sort white smoke, coolant loss and oil loss..........

starting on 6 change the plugs???? using water n oil???....... sorry its either head gasket or liner problems... youve been sold a dog,

shouldnt use oil from service to service, and if no external water leaks ...wheres it going??

I have been told by a friend to think of the simple things 1st, so your advice has confirmed that.

Cheers

ebbadger, I have asked myself a few questions over the last few days, this car could be a nightmare, but I'm sticking with it, the rest of the car seems good, I'll just have to sort the engine out.

It should be noted, I bought the car for £1500.

The LPG is a years old, cost £1500 and has 2 years warranty, all paper work is there!

The body doesn't have a mark, very nice!

Interior in the Cream Leather from the RR P38, also in good condition.

It may not be cheap to get these problems sorted, but I still think I have a good car here.

yep, even an engine change if needed is easy but a service is a waste of time with your issues, losing a lot of oil is worrying if its not dripping out or burning out the rear, water loss too shouldnt happen.

water loss only id suggest a leak but as you are losing oil and water AND having white smoke then head gasket or liners it is...

hopefully you got a good deal and a few hundred pounds and a days work to either fix or swop the engine and you will be a mobile happy and confirmed member of the worlds greatest car club

cheers steve
