hi just wondered if anyone could help me with my defender, it goes in all the gears but will only drive in diff lock, when its in normal high if i let out the clutch when in gear nothing happens at all

have you checked the linkage is fully over to the non-diff lock side? sounds like when you think it's not in diff lock it's really in neutral. take the gear knobs and gaiter off and have a look at what's going on and see if it's travelling all the way from left to right

You have a broken drive shaft most likely ask someone to look under the motor to see which props haft is spinning when in high normal the offending shaft will be on the axle with the propagate spinning then you have to jack
It up and feel Which side it is good luck hopefully it's a rear one!!

my mate had a quick look for me the front prop shaft was spinning

In which case either cv or half shaft gone.

You need to work out which side and then...

I'd imagine if you jacked the car up, put it in gear, the wheel at the front that turned easy would be the side that's broke, that's just a guess though - i'm sure someone else will confirm/suggest the correct way.

hi thanks, he did say he thinks its the half shaft when he had a look and you can hear a clicking noise on the drivers side, is it a hard job { i know nothing lol}

I've not done it myself, but looking at busters guide doesn't look too bad.

Make sure though that you have the right tools, for example a new 13mm 12 point socket - if your calipers are as rusted on as mine were.

Take it slow, get someone help you if you're not sure, also get yourself some one shot grease ready.

ok mate thanks for your help

Drivers side cv half shaft if your
Lucky it's the cv and the diff splines are good

Remove caliber tie up out the way, remove drive member, remove hub bearings and pull hub off. Remove stub axle and have a bucket ready you should have lots of ****y oil come out if not its most likely run dry. Once the stub is removed pull the shaft and cv out hopefully as I say the splines at the diff are ok and the cv has gone.

If the diff splines have gone then remove the axle end the other side or strip as above which ever you fancy. Then remove diff

Clean everything spotless as possible almost clinical and then
Re Assemble with required parts

Good luck mate I did one a while back charged £140 for second hand diff strip and rebuild as his shafts were ok.

94 ok should be 24 hopefully its the CV as they are quite weak but easier to change for you. Looking at the drive member the centre of the hub with 5 bolts in the middle of the wheel how thick is it from the back of the bolt heads to the hub?

is it:
A............. about 15mm or
B.............. about 30mm??

I think you should have 24 spline if its original you will be surprised how many are not tho.
