Hey All,

Anybody out there that can help with the following Freelander issue?

Started my car the other day and the revs immediately shot up to 3000 - without me touching a pedal. After a couple of seconds the revs then went up to 4000!

I've tried it a couple of times since then and every time it's the same.

Any ideas? Am I looking at an electrics / accelerator / something else issue?

No, it's a 2003 petrol Freelander.

Not sure it it's related but I've been having periods of gurgling noises from behind the dashboard and my coolant level seems to be dropping pretty quickly too.

Have you got any coolant leaks under the engine? Is the carpet under the dash wet, indicating the heater matrix is leaking? Have you had work done on the engine recently? What does the temp guage do? Whats the engine oil level like and is there any cream coloured stuff in the engine oil filler cap?
 
Not sure about coolant leaking under the engine - will check later.

Carpet under the dash is dry.

No recent work on the engine.

Temp gauge behaving normally.

Engine oil level ok and no cream coloured stuff.

They're classic signs of the head gasket going right? Would/could that be related to the reving problem?
 
Reving problem could be a sticking throttle flap, with the engine running and the revs high, see if you can push the flap shut - its at the point where the accelerator cable attaches to the air intake, if nothing there then check the entire air intake system for any splits in hoses including the breather hoses, also check that the IACV (idle air intake valve) is not stuck open allowing to much air in although this tends to be more with a hot engine that a cold one as it would be open anyway.

Some good info here, its MGF related but all the same engine :)

The gurgling/coolant loss can be a faulty coolant expansion bottle cap, this is quite common on a K Series, get it fixed quick though as it can cause overheating and a HGF. If your water/oil is not contaminated then id hope its just the cap.

I agree that the Throttle flap is a possibility although I thought it was usually a temperature sticking issue than cold starts, however its really easy to clean out, very light oil on moving points with WD40 and on the cable.

Also as said, the TPS or IACV could be an issue, if the cleaning does not help then you can replace them, the IACV should "tick" back to zero on when the ignition is on, so if you can't hear it maybe its stuck. MAybe its not the TPS as that would not cause more throttle when your foots not on the pedal, the IACV however could allow more air in. I can't remember if a diagnostics check on the ECU will show a iffy IACV/TPS, if you can get a cheap digs it may be worth it before you commit to parts.

Finally I also agree that MGF/Elise forums are a good source of info on the K-Series.

Thanks for all the comments on this.
Having had another look and fiddle under the bonnet it was discovered that one of the tubes had popped out of place.
A temporary repair has been achieved but I reckon I'll need to replace the offending part to ensure it doesn't slip out again.
Can anyone identify the name of the tube in question? (shown in image by red arrow)
