Hi
Got MAP freewheel hubs on front of landy. On when bought, checked them and found passengerside one doesn't lock when you move the nut. The nut moves ok but wheel when turned not comnnected to prop shaft.
So think
broken halfshaft
or
hub broken.
Never had to do anything with freewhell hubs before so any advice on checking/ removing appreciated. If i remove the freewheel hub what do i need to put back on to return to standard set up

Thanks
John

map freewheel hubs work a little differently to others,in that they have four plates of steel that slide to lock the centre to the outer casings when you engage them

these are operated by a cam ring (my best description) and either the ring has seized or the four metal plates have, you'll probably need to take the cover off and inspect the workings

just need to undo the 6 bolts and gently tap the cover to release it to be able to inspect the workings

when replacing the cover remember to line the dots and spigot in the case and cover back up when reassembling

Hi
took cover off and checked it, all seemed to be working. When in the free position was able to stop end of shaft rotating whilst spinning road wheel. When in locked position not able to stop end of shaft rotating but the propshaft still doesn't rotate. Any ideas what going on? Is half shaft broken? How easy to fix and where do you get one from, is the longer on on passengerside.

Does sound like a driveshaft has gone. Not a difficult job but rather involved. You'll need to take the free wheel hub off, followed by the hub proper, brake backplate, steering linkages, the swivel pins the swivel seal and the swivel.

piffle !!

all you need to remove is the fwh, the drum, the hub and the stub, leave the brakes intact on the flexi hose and support the backplate out the way (tie it up)

once the stub is off the halfshaft can be withdrawn

are you sure you have both fwh's engaged as the prop won't rotate if they aren't both set to 4x4

I stand corrected - been a while since I rebuilt a swivel. With the stub axle off there's enough clearance to withdraw the shaft. Depending where it's broken (make sure - see the comment above about making sure the opposite hub is actually engaging) you might have to remove the swivel to get all the bits out. The diff will have to come out, too. I put plain driveshaft ends back on mine - I found FWHs were more trouble than they're worth.

And please download the manual before proceeding. http://www.landroverweb.com/landrover/pdf-land-rover-manuals/

Thanks Guys
will check out tommorrow bit about having both engaged as when i did drivers side to start with, when engaged it turned prop shaft. Hopefully be that and won't have to dismantle!
