Hi all, I am going to start looking for series land rover for my sons 21st. I dont know what sort of money they go for. In reality they vary considerably.
Not an issue working on one as long as it is roadworthy ish:blabla:. Ta Bri

good question bri, but its a case of how longs a piece of string, first place to start is with your budget and work from there, if you find you cant find a roadworthy one (mot.d) for that then you would have to look around to see what you could afford.
remember something is only worth what someone is willing to pay........
it would help others to advise if you told how much you were willing to spend?
which series you after? are you wanting a tax free one (pre 72 i believe) or happy to pay the large road tax bill?

You really need a budget! You can start at £500 for a shed - or £1500 for a running resto S3. S2's are getting valuable now, though more 88" available, and S1's - don't even bother!

In essence, you have a range from £500-15,000.....so you need to set a budget!

Don't forget that the £600 project "not much work for MOT" will end up as £2000 with a little more to do before MOT.....I type from experience ;)

I have just about hit the budget I set myself so am cool with the cost but you need to be aware that you can spend and spend with a series.

depends what you want. as mentioned you gets what you pay for. I bought mine for about 500 quid and it was a proper snotter, chassis patched to ****, every panel dented and uses a pint of oil every 50 miles. but it works, and I like it, it looks ruined but has 'character'. spent about 300 quid ish getting it on the road including new tyres. it is tax free, but it won't be winning any concours comps...

watch out for tyres, they can add a lot to the price and can be a useful bargaining tool to haggle the price down if it needs them

erm, as I'm 23 meself and kinda knowing the idea of getting presents, one advice:
let your son choose the car then, he's the one who has to fix it later.

My wife doesnt even try to step in between me and my S3, she saw what my reaction to my father was when he said it was a cold, greasy, old, smelly, dirty, unreliable shed.

He wasnt pleased going without dinner that night (I was cooking) and without car next morning (he must have misled his keys....).

Let him at least choose it himself. It will be a very binding relationship.
And you cant go wrong buying one for a grand. Just Have 1500 quid ready for the new chassis :D

Been looking at series motors and going from the usual haunts (ebay, trader etc.) then you are looking at under £1000 for a 1973 onwards s3 or £1000+ for a road legal tax exempt model. Saw a tax exempt series 2 with mot get no bids at £1500 but then a very clean series 1 got around £5k. Also got told of a series 3 yesterday with T&T that could be had for £600.

They are only worth what someone is willing to pay.

If your not concerned with doing a bit of work then there seems to be a few bargains about.

Cripes! How much oil????

I have put a pint in mine in 18 months - and that is driven daily!

Cripes! How much oil????

yeah, not great. It's reduced quite a bit now I have some crankcase vacuum recirculation system going - made my own catch tank from a jamjar :)

it's ****ing out the rear seal and the sump gasket, and it burns quite a bit as well. Still, the oil is cheaper than the petrol and it doesn't get driven that often.

I paid £900 for a 109 with MOT and tax - it then spectacularly failed its next MOT on chassis rot. I spent over £2500 restoring it ( replacement chasis being the biggest chunk of cost) and finally sold it for £1500. It was an expensive lesson (strangely the only thing I regret is selling the vehicle).
The moral is - 1) Buy the best you can afford, and leaving aside the tax free break for the moment, on condition, not age - and be thorough when you inspect
2) Look around at a few before buying - dpn`t buy the first thing you see
3) Avoid "projects" which are half done unless you know the seller and how competent they are.
4) Generally speaking , mechanical issues will be less terminal than chassis and bulkhead issues - replacement engines are fairly cheap realtive to the value of the vehicle, replacement chassis not, unless you are creative with a welder.
5) Let your son join in the test drives - my son loves the idea of a series but isn`t so wild about the driving experience. If a series was his only car it would not have been practical for him.
6) Check out some insurers first - even at 21 the range of quotes will be unpredictable.
7) Don`t ignore early 90`s either - worth looking at for the comparison.
It is very easy to buy with your heart not your head (I did), by all means buy in to the legend, but try and keep it to the back of your mind when viewing and buying the vehicle, and try and take someone who knows series vehciles with you.

My advice is buy a total wreck and spend many hours of quality time with your son restoring it. He will appreciate something he has helped restore.

Cheers for replies.
We restored a mini 1275 gt a few yrs back and sold it 4 yrs ago. Crazy money we got but didnt match the time , effort and love we both gave it. Didnt move with it as did not have a garage to keep it. Thats sorted now.
I have been looking at 90s, bearing in mind tax free and what the difference will mean in long/ short term.

buy the best one your budget will allow
keep in mind
£500- a project on bricks
£1000- a rolling deathtrap
£1500- bulkhead and chassis probably okay, worn engine ect
£2000- a tidy motor with good chassis and bulkhead- maybe 200tdi conversion and t+t
£2000+ one thats been recently restored with galv chassis and full nut and bolt rebuild

Or you could go to the Huddersfield landrover centre and give them £15k for a restored one :)

ahh :) i do know they can go for tonnes more than 2k, but it was getting late, and i really couldnt be bothered to type even more haha
