Having been bitten by the green laning bug (really enjoyed last Sunday) I want to protect my Disco and prep it for green laning. I'll be using it as a family car mostly so I don't want anything too aggressive or extreme.

It already has a 2"lift and AT tyres so that will be ok but I am thinking about:

Steering Guard
Sump Guard
Diff Guard
CB

and...... removing the side steps and tow bar.

The side steps aren't fitted in the conventional way with brackets and bolts. The previous owner seems to have welded them on so an Angle Grinder will be the way to go.

Anything else I should consider?

Serious and amusing suggestions will be considered! :D

A snorkel is advised but not essential depending on how much laneing and off roading you intend to do,

You can either buy or make one depending on your budget :)

Your better off with diff guards and steering guards I've been off roading for years and never had a snorkel and the side steps will give a little protection to the body from trees they won't last long but if their welded on don't bother removing them till you have to then replace with proper side guards

Before you start buying goodies... make sure its all ship shape, no good having all the kit , for it to break down .... check your trackrods , prop ujs etc and i would also polybush it... anything that is worn , a laning day, WILL find it...;):)

Don't bother with a steering guard they act like plows if you need towing out backwards you'd be better off fitting "sumo" steering bars along with a steering damper relocation kit as a steering gaurd won't protect that. Plus they are a bar-steward to clean behind!
As for diff guards buy the ones made by QT they look the mutts nuts compared to wrap-around types and look like they offer alot more protection.

What benefit would the snorkel provide if I am just green laning?

You would be suprised how deep the water can get on some lanes mate. Ive seen lanes become impassable to cars without snorkels and wading stuff. I agree you don't need one though as long as your carefull. Personally the most usefull thing Ive ever done is fit a decent rear Work/reversing light. And a steering guard with recovery points is a good idea.

I agree with the qt diff guards had them on my classic they bolt on the top of diff then rap round and bolt to bottom, better than the ones that just clamp on

Thanks for the tos guys. The first thing to investigate is that my Disco squeaks and rattles like hell now after 2 laning trips, it never used too. I've been told that any grease, lube etc that might have been there will have been rubbed off on the lanes.

It squeaks when pulling away at slow speed. Worn UJs front and rear?

Hi as above,

Some lanes can be deeper than they appear. Also some lanes may have fords and with a down poor you will be surprised how quick the water level can change,
as said not essential but for pice of mind in that "just incase" incedent You will be glad you have it,

Could be some bushs worn somewhere... best bet is , set yourself a list of things to do , polybush the lot , check your prop ujs, grease ater every green lane trip, if cash allows, fit decent double carden or wide angle props. with a lift fitted you will notice that you will get through ujs on standard props quite quickly , front one the most. just replace as much as you can afford really , that way you know whats been done , and your not waiting for things to fail.. Just do alittle every month...:) if ya going to fit a snorkel , also fit a wading kit;)
