Im interested in trying green laning, so in the near future i may be looking around for a group who doesnt mind a newbie tagging along. I should be collecting my landrover 110 in about to weeks when i return from working away, my first job being to get 2 extra seats fitted,

my question is what are the main modifications or accsessories i should make to my standard 110 if any before considering attending a meet.

from what i has seen im guessing; steering guard & sump protector would be high on the agenda????
 
First what part of the country do you want to go laning

As for the prep it depends what you want to do. We have asked newbies joining our trips to have at least AT tyres and front and rear recovery points (proper ones not the tie down things)

My Landy has been just about everywhere with AT tyres, recovery points, steering guard, diff guards, CB radio and thats it.

Edited to say I forgot the Rock Sliders, but thats because I have never needed them :D

im from the midlands so would be open to suggestions, would have to travel anyway.
will start saving the pennys. and get to work.
 
You will be surprised what a standard landy can do. All I brought was a cheap cb....

We have a Wales trip in a couple of weeks, but that might not be a good place to start.

You could come on our Dales weekend in July. I have room in my Newbie and Freelander group. Nothing you couldn't do in a standard Defender but the option to try more difficult stuff if you want

There's lots of kit available but a decent set of tyres and front & rear recovery points is all you really need to start off with, (along with a mate with a similar sized 4x4 & some recovery gear). Diff guards are cheap (about £25 a pair at Craddocks) and worth getting, never had either a steering guard or sump protector on any of mine. You can add other more expensive stuff (snorkels, etc etc,) as you go along and if you feel you need it. As someone else said, a Defender is pretty competent straight from the box. Where abouts in the Midlands are you?
 
I live in coventry , however i stay away a lot with work at the moment. but normally back there weekends give or take.

I appreciate that thankyou for the offer, il hopefully be able to take you up on that offer however due to work commitments i will not be able to confirm until nearer the date. I see also that this route may be suitable for children to take part, which is even more ideal.

You've been watching people who weren't looking where they were going then? :p Don't need those for most lanes. If you were to go extreme then maybe.

As long as your Landy has fuel, tyres with some tread :D a recovery point or two as Sue says, and it works then join in. I would have thought diff guards would be better than a sump protector - they're lower than the sump ;)

Someone in the group will spot for you if you're unsure about an "obstacle" - sometimes the obstacle turns out not to be one and the Landy just goes "was that it?" :)

There's a couple of Shropshire laning threads in the Green Lane section here to keep your eyes on if you don't mind a bit of travelling (roughly about 1 hr 1/2 from Cov to start point). We're out next week in Wales (furthest afield is coming from Mansfield) but probably not a run to cut your teeth on tbh.
 
im in Tamworth if you want to head out this way i have a few routes i can take you out on before you tackle the big boy shropshire lanes :D
