Hi guys, getting ready for a respray and going to tackle removing existing paintwork, it's been hand painted by brush by previous owner so hoping to get it back to the original mid grey finished with two pack. Looking for advice on best way of going about stripping paint off, also I have been advised that because of existing paintwork that all paint on rivets will need shifting incase new paint job reacts, if this is the case should I drill out and replace rivets with new ones ( I happen to have access to loads of rivets which are no use at my work place) have attached pics hope they all go through if not ill try upload again! Thanks

lol drill out the rivets. tell the guy to bugger off and get a quote somewhere else
 
Never heard of having to drill out the rivets before a respray, thats a new one. A freind of mine did replace all his rivets with stainless ones after a respray and it did look rather good I must say, but then I'm an anal for details like that.

doh! stainless will corrode faster than mild steel with aluminium. he needs to make sure they are well painted and no salt gets in (ie winter grit)
 
one thing I always wonder about is what looks best, paint cappings the same as the body colour, leave them galv'ed or use something like galvafroid to make them nice and shiny
 
Nitromors paint stripper, paint scraper and a wire wheel on an electric drill. Good rinse off afterwards otherwise old paint may react to 2pk.

Thanks everybody for all the feedback I suppose as a novice the river idea didn't seem that bad in hindsight and judging by your feedback I will stay cleàr of that! Think I will go down the nitromors route, just to throw it out there I have access to workshop compressor so could hook up something to air if anybody has any ideas?

Other silly question but can I leave everything as it is or would I be best taking panels, hardtop off etc...

That's a good question have been to do body shops and both made a mountsin out of the rivets and handpaint and said they would both have to be stripped right back even with the use of an isolator, hence why I'm doing stripping myself and trying to cut costs as best I can

or you could always sand it flat and hand paint it :D

Lots to think about, gonna start sanding it back this weekend with Orbital sander and see what way it's looking before I decide next plan of attack. Hopefully I can get most of it off fingers crossed ;)
 
I'm also +1 for paint stripper, just done mine with the low cost B&Q stuff (Diall) it's slow but works a treat and then jet was and rub the remaining soft flaky paint off with a wire brush in a grinder.

As it happens I did replace the rivets, but only because the old ones had been sanded flat in previous paining efforts.
 
I used a orbital sander and paint stripper for the more difficult bits. Starchem Synstryp is brilliant paint stripper, you have to be really careful with it though. I then spray etch primed and hand rollered some paint from Paddocks. It didn't come out too bad.
