I had a bit of a Freelander guru look round my new toy today and after looking under the front passenger side wheel well announced "you lucky b******* you have a preheater" and I replied "and it does what". Nothing is mentioned about such a device in the book of all that is good that came with the new toy.

So after a bit of looking it heats up stuff on cold days quicker than it normally heats up things when just the engine is running.

Ok, I can live with that because it must be a good thing, but then the remote control for remote starting of the pre heater was mentioned. Well nothing on the key or door unlocker.

So does anyone know if there is something I can buy as an optional extra to switch it on before I usually start up the car that doesn't mean I have to remortgage my soul to the devil?

I don't know of such a device but would like one also...my td4 es has a pre heater, demister working in 3 minutes with mine. wondered what the hell it was first time it came on...ticking from the back whine from the front then a deep rumbling switched the car off quick and it carried on I then relised what it was felt a right burk...great bit of kit though...

Hi there,

I've got a Freelander Td4 with the pre-heater and heated front screen (does yours?). In cold weather the engine reaches running temp in less than five minutes... it's unbelieveable for a diesel, so it's well worth having it!

To answer your question, you can get a separate remote for the pre-heater but to be honest, with this sort of heating efficiency it probably isn't worth it. You don't notice any significant drop in fuel efficiency either.

One thing to note: LR reckon that the pre-heater will function automatically up to an ambient temp ~5 c but mine seems to run in much warmer weather. Also, you may get strange looks from passers-by when you're stopped at traffic lights 'cos when it's running it sounds like a hot air balloon!

Hi,

In official LR language it's referred to as Fuel Burning Heater (FBH).
One word of warning though, if you do, in wintertime, a short trip and you enter your garage before it stopped it's cycle it will do it in your garage and the result is that it stinks like hell.

Thanks for all the information. Unfortunately I don't have a garage, so no worries on that point.

I don't think I have a heated front screen, is there anything obvious that shows it is a heated screen?

if its a heated screen you'll see little heating elements in the glass

FBH comes on automatically at 5 degrees (ambient temp) and goes off when the engine reaches 80 degrees for those that are interested

One very cold day last winter some bloke on the pavement stopped me and said yer radiators gone mate...it was steam from the heater...your right though it doesn't use any fuel worth mentioning...

There are two upgrades available from Websato. The first is a timer that you can set to start the FBH, say, 20 minutes before you plan to leave the house on a frosty morning. You go out to a toasty cabin and clear windows.

The second is a remote that triggers the FBH to do the same thing.

Both are a couple of hundred quid, but they are on my Christmas list.
