Hi Guys and Gals , I have recently become the owner of a 01 plate freelander hard tail and I must admit to having a few concerns you may be able to offer some advice about .
Firstly is the brakes , when applied at anything more than a crawl I get a knocking noise that can be felt through the brake pedal
Secondly the clutch is biting about 10mm above the floor , it goes into gear ok and its not slipping but it does make life a chore

If you have any advice or info that could help me it would be most appreciated

Ditto, I have never understood from day 1 of joying this great forum why? members do not add their engine or even their name in the personal section, or maybe under their signature, it would be of great help to those whom like to help others, not having just voicing my opinion.

It could be the rear diff mounts or even the VCU bearing mounts, sticking brake cylinder, take the drums off and see what is going on in there.
 
For the clutch issue, either the clutch needs bleeding (a special job) or the clutch slave cylinder bracket is loose or cracked.

I had a similar problem with brakes, it was caused by a wheel sensor that was slightly too far from the tone wheel on the drive shaft. The ABS thought a wheel was locking and so backed off the brake on that wheel.

Not sure if that could be the case , the noise is coming from the front , also the prop shaft is currently removed awaiting a replacement
 
As its the 1.8 the clutch hydraulics are a single sealed master/piping/slave unit. There is no bleeding that can be performed (at least easily) and its not common for one of the units to fail hydraulically. What is common is for the release arm (that the slave pushes) to tighten up/sieze so that it does not turn freely. This puts the hydraulic system under to higher stress - the hydraulics appear to cope with it - but the bracket, that holds the slave in place, bends and cracks. So rather than (or as well as) moving the arm - the slave moves backwards.

So you need to you'll probably need to lubricate where the release arm goes through the bell housing. This can done done with a couple of drops of engine oil - and then done each time you service the car. You'll possibly also need a new bracket and ultimately the hydraulic pack. Examine the bracket for any cracks and just make sure it looks OK once you have freed the arm up. I'm not sure if the hydraulics can be removed from the old bracket without breaking the clip that holds it on.

I would revisit the thought that it could be the ABS making the knocking you are getting. Does the knocking occur more rapidly the faster the car is going? If the knocking is repeating as the same rate regardless of speed - it definitely points to the ABS. I'm not sure the last time I felt the ABS kick in, but I do feel the TC kick in occasionally when I'm on gravel and it is a knocking I can feel through the peddle.

Might also be that lower engine tie bar has worn it's rubber bush out.
