Hello
Yesterday lost my power steering while out driving on a Disco 1 96 model    steering heavy but got home alright but checked tyre pressure all ok, checked fluid levels ok, no leaks from PAS Pump, belt still connected, checked steering box no leaks, also bleed the steering box seems ok, now my question HOW to I know which part has failed, the steering box or the power steering pump??????? Is either of these items easy/hard to buy, or replace??? Can I drive the Disco without the PAS until I get the fault repaired????? Please any help

Hi there, can anyone tell me the solution to this problem, I have exactly the same problem and have done the same things as becks, cheers,
Simon

I'm no expert by any means, but if it were my car i would change the pump first, being cheaper than the box, assuming fluid levels are ok & belt still on.
Have you checked the steering column & joints?

I think if it was the box then u couldnt steer normally(even if heavy)....it seems that u lost just the power assistance.......my money is on the pump.

tis a relatively easy job to do with basic tools, just make sure that you slacken off the bolts that hold the pulley to the pump before removing the serpentine belt
