Hey guys,

I had my cam belt changed recently and since I have chewed a few aux belts. I have noticed that the power steering pump pulley is 3-5mm out of line which is eating the first two ribs of the belts.
I have removed the belt and checked that there is no play in it, bearings seem fine (if it has bearings) and all the pulleys run fine with no stiffness. Is the anything I can do to move the pulley back in to line? There's not a lot of room down there and I only have fairly basic tools, mis this something I can do myself?

Ta in advance.

Use washers to space it out from the engine ? Grind some of it off to set it back ?

I say that a bit tongue in cheek , are you sure its out of whack with the crank and other engine pulleys and not just the alternator ? Its quite common for the alternator to be put back on without the correct spacing washers ......;

It's just the pas pulley, everything else is perfect. I've searched a bit harder and it looks like I might be in for a new pump, but I'd like not to have to because I wouldn't have a clue how to do it, have the time or space. The usual.

Well if you were taking it off to adjust it then it wouldnt be much more work to replace it ...time I can understand but space , no.....it can all be done from above at the roadside if necessary

Ok so I've got a big drive, but not great working limbs. I didn't realise it could be done from above, I just have nightmares about draining things and bleeding stuff. Don't suppose the is a good thread for idiots on how to replace them?

Same here on the limbs issue ! Registered disabled ! Have a look at busterbus's fix all instructions , might be summat there ....and , draining maybe , but the PAS is self bleeding

Power steering pump is easy on the 300Tdi. I do mine leaving the viscous in place but it may help to take it off.

Crack off the power steering pulley bolts
Release the tensioner with a 15mm and remove serp belt
Undo alternator (1 llong and 1 short bolt) and cable tie out the way watching for the wires
Undo high pressure feed (17mm) and catch excess fluid
Undo low pressure feed (screwdriver/jubilee clip) and catch excess fluid
Undo the 4 outer bolts to remove. Some new pumps come with the mounting plate already attached but some dont, if you need to swap your mounting plate over then crack off the other 3 bolts whilst its still fixed to the engine or else you will struggle whewn its off the car.

Refit new pump, connect all hoses, alternator, serp belt etc

Jack up front axle off ground, top up ps resevoir, start engine and turn wheels left to right until the pumps working, do this whilst topping up the fluid to the correct level. Should bleed itself like this, failing that if there is still air in the system you can always bleeed it using the bleed nipple on the top of the steering box (front offside engine bay).

Hope this help!!

There are some really helpful people here. Thanks guys. I am of the generation where I've been bought up to be afraid of getting oil on my hands and I have to use a dictionary to find out what things like escutcheon mean (really, I did). It's kind of crazy, my dad worked for
Jag and Land Rover for almost 40 years and he can't change a wheel, damn engineers!

Fixed it by by releasing the tension on the belt and pushing the pulley back with a pry bar. It seems ok, I haven't driven it but let it run for a while with no problems. A little happier now.

The mechanic who had it for the cam belt change said there is in and out motion on the pulley anyway, which seems contrary to everything I have read on here.

Scratch that. Pulley has moved back out of line. Looks like a new pump unless anyone can suggest anything else to check first?

Ok, so I've ordered a new pump. I'm gonna brave this job myself as it sounds fairly easy, but are there any obvious things I can mess up/avoid/ways to make it easier?

As I have to do it at night, would there be any harm in removing it now and putting the new one on when it arrives? I have no plans to move it.

I only ask because I would rather spread the job over 2 nights. It also gives me a chance to clock whether I need anything special to do it.

I want to go away at the weekend and I'll have 2 very angry children if we can't.

Thanks guys.

undo pulley as previous undo 4 bolts holding pump mounting plate to aliminum housing ,pull out pump loosen and remove pipes bung pipe ends,it is easier with pump loose refit by fitting pipes before pumpensuring correct orientation, the only reason to wait till new pump is loss of oil through unbunged pipe ,pas box will bleed itself by steering lock to lock till oil level in res is clear and correct

Same happened when I bought my disco 1. Bought New pump. easy replaced. When took the other one off the shaft fell out. couldn't see what would have held it in. So just chucked it. Should have stripped it to see how it worked and put together. Then I could be more help to Myself and others. lol

So had to stay home this weekend. Angry children.

I spent 2 hours trying to get the pulley bolts off and gave up. I just hope my serp belt holds on the drive to the garage next week.

I wish I new it was such an easy job that I could my self. I paid £400 Aylmer Garage to replace it a month ago!
Today I broke down on my way to work the belt had snapped the PS pulley was resting on the radiator pipes and the actual bolt holes broken.
I am curious what caused that ! The car was sent to Aylmer to sort out I am waiting for them to come back to me but on my first call the guy on the phone said It should be covered by the guaranty well with £400 it better does!

I will try to post pic later

£400! I paid 60 for a pump, 7 for a belt and the mechanic at my local charged me £50 to fit the new pump when I threw in the towel.

I called the Aylmers this morning only to finf out that they changed the PS pump the belts and the PS fluid and that I have to pay 224 plus VAT!
I never gave them the instruction to do the work I was still waiting to tell me what was wrong with it.
Today he told me that some how the belt came off an got stack and that caused the pulley bolts to snap! When I asked him how this is possible he said I dont know is your car !

When I told him that I dont have the money to pay and I wont pay for a one month old PS pump he said that he didn't know that and he will try and sort it out under the guarantee.

But listen to that. the first time I changed the pump the guy chrged me 408 inclusive which means 340+vat pump £200 an £10 for the fluid. the rest labour.

Today he quoted me £224 +VAT for all!
Is it me or the prices are a bit unconsistent ?

google anr2157 new genuine pump £70 ish, belt err5911 less than £10 if pulley fell off new pump then it had loose bolts
