Hi All,

I was hoping to get a little help regarding a power steering leak on the output shaft of my TD5.

This has only happened today (seals on order).

Ive looked at the explosion diagrams of the power steering system and was wondering if i can do this with the power steering system in situ?

The seals are bought in 4 bits (circlip, 2 x oil seals and packer). Once the lower lock plate and nut are removed is it just the case of working down the spline removing old seals for new then reassemble or does the whole power steering unit need to be removed?

Any advice or pointers would be great :)

Have a look on here, plenty of threads as common problem.

The seal *can* be done in situ if you remove the drop arm. *But* changing the seal doesnt always solve the problem as the shaft corrodes, meaning the new seal doesnt 'seal' to it.

Some people have done it successfully, but just as commonly people just get a recon box!

theres 1 oil seal and one dirt seal ,if you do it in situ once circlips removed start engine and turn steering wheel to use hyd pressure to blow seal and steel washer out ,with a suitable container underneath
 
Thats great, ive had a look and to me the pain will be removing drop link and breaking that drag link.

Any tips on this?

drag links easy just hit the end a couple of times to break the taper hold ,drop arms tend to be a little easier than tdi ones but a puller and a good size drift and hammer are still needed usually,once every things off and out clean shaft with 2-300 grit emery
 
So once you have some movement on the drop arm (down spline) is the job pretty straight forward?

I'm hoping to tackle this thursday (weather permitting).
 
once drop arm is released from its taper lock it will drop off ,thats why hitting works it distorts taper temporarily so releasing hld
 
Hi mate,

Yeah i will do, im just working out the best way to jack the front end up (if i need to) to take some weight off the connections.

it has recently been towed which is why i think the seals have gone or perished.

ive seen the guide (Rave) of how to do the job with removing complete unit which is quite a job in itself.

I'm hoping with taking care and checking everything over should sort the problem out first time. i know people have put brake fluid in the PAS system - im reluctant to do this as its only delaying the fix.
