Went to park my 200tdi defender 90 and the steering started juddering and making a loud squealing noise.

It's done this a couple of times in the last two months.

Any ideas what it could be? I'm assuming its the power steering. If the power steering fails what happens? Does it mean I lose all steering?

Does driving without the power steering damage the steering in any way?

I'm off to Scotland in a week or so and I'm a bit worried it will give up the ghost.

D

get a new belt though, tightening yours will help for the moment, you wont loose all your steering but it will be very stiff as it is power assisted not full power steering

Ok, thanks for the advice. What do you think the problem is?

the belts wear and become loose frequently ,i have had a few were the bolts holding pump and alternator come loose or snap so its worth just checking as well

Ok, great I was worried it was the pump.

If I change the belts and tighten everything up will that solve the problem.

How easy is this job?

Thanks again

should help alot,if after that still bad maybee the pump is on the way out,its good also not to turn the wheel unless your moving forward or backwards.

belt and bolts works 99.9% of the time

Ive got one to do on boxing day where the threads stripped, helicoil hell-here I come:(

Hi all, is there any pictures on how to do this? As mine became stuff today.. Driving is fine but parking sucks! Haha

If you look down the front of your engine, you should see a big pulley with a couple of belts on it.

One goes to up to the fan and the alternator and is known as the 'fan belt', and the other goes to your Power Steering pump.

If you only have the fan belt, you need another to replace the one you've lost.

Simples ;) ;)
