Belt snapped. Get pulleys checked for cause of broken or derailed belt before it is simply replaced.

Would be suicidal for an L Series, because you would have been lucky that it didn't get wrapped round the main pulley when it came off the 1st time and pushed the cambelt off.
I know the TD4 has a chain, but don't know what else damage a snagged belt flying round the engine bay could do.
What ever, make sure it has a decent chance of staying on before making the drive.

Gates belts are the best to use, but you need to find out if a pulley is oscillating and causing the belt to come off, it could be the crank pulley water pump pulley or the free rolling one.
Change the both.
If it is the crank pulley only use Corteco

Something has caused belt to come off.
I have seen broken tensioner, collapsed water pumps and more !!
Get it checked first.
You wont fit it on your own without taking wheel and cover off and using correct spanner to take tension off.
It is not easy when you know how !!

The garage had my Freelander taken to has only just received the Aux Belt, but they are going through a load of things that could need replacing like the water pump etc so I have rung him back and told him to just do the belt. I can"t afford to have anymore done so what do you reckon I should do?

Only change what is broken !! Not what garage wants to do for extra money.
If water pump is broken, then belt will come off again if not repaired.

Worth changing both while in there but why did it come off or break ??

2 belts, one does the power steering, water pump and alternator. The other has to come off first and is for the air con. Did both belts come off?

I think they have had your pants down with the labour the belts are quite cheap Continental are up there with the gates belts.
£23.78 Auxiliary belt.
£12.75 A/C belt.
Therefore labour for a 45 minutes job cost £200
Plus you stil do not know why it threw the belt.
