Freelander 1 03 tdi Power steering seems to have failed on drive into work this morning. Can just about drive in straight line and slight bends but really have to haul round corners. Noticed that battery light is on which is unusual. Have had wheel wobble for a few weeks which was getting worse and was booked into garage on Monday for this issue. Pump failure or steering rack? Fluid at normal level no leak. Any help would be appreciated so I know how deep my pockets need to be in advance!
 
Don't know the TD4, but are the PAS pump & alternator driven off a 'fan' belt? If they are then that's looking like you're problem.
 
Yep, had a look about an hour ago with a torch and it is snapped and sitting at the bottom of engine compartment and not on the pulleys! Thanks for the post GrumpyGel!!
 
Make sure you pick it out before driving it any further - there's a couple of nasty things that can happen if they get snagged in the pulley.

Doesn't the TD4 water pump run off the fanbelt or am I getting confused?
 
Lucky its not an L Series, or else you would be looking for a new engine, or head at least - they always seem to take the cambelt out on the L Series.
 
Thoroughly check the crankshaft damper when fitting new belt, if you find shiny metal filings then it needs replacing as well

A TD4 is a miserable excuse for an engine - the L series is a " flower that blooms in the magnificent garden of automotive propulsion."
Shame on you sir - walk of shame (Game of thrones style - naked down the steps and through the town with bleeding feet and hurled abuse ... SHAME ...... SHAME ....... SHAME...... WHIP...... SHAME.............:eek:

IMHO, its a good idea to find out why the belt has snapped
Usually due to lack of ever being replaced - :) - it can be sometimes down to seized pump drives - but....................... usually pure neglect.. (ALWAYS - of course :rolleyes::D - on the part of the PO !!! :))

I totally agree that the L Series is a magnificent engine and by far the most reliable propulsion system system installed in Freelanders, combined with top levels of economy, versatility and something else (its always best to use 3 examples of something) :)

Mine "blooms" at about 3K revs when accelerating - lovely volumous blooms I can watch in my mirrors :)

However, I do believe all that sun out there must have rather scrambled your sense of reality - probably about once a year there's some sorry fellow on the forum who's L Series has thrown a fan/drive/aux belt and they appear to be drawn by a power for forceful than gravity, magnetism and something else to the main pulley. I've often wondered if its possible to fit some form on guard on the open side of the pulley to try and deflect a flailing belt away from it.

I get far to much enjoyment from driving my L Series to spend any time watching GOT - never seen an episode.

I have been waiting for a form of entertainment more aligned with my passion for driving the L Series Freelander, and have found it in Pokemon Zombie Killer. It is a new mobile device game downloadable from GooglePlay and the AppStore whereby you cruise around your neighbourhood searching out groups of brain dead Zombies looking down at their phones. You then take them out with your vehicle and gain points by pairing your device to their phones and it accumulates their Pokemon score. The L Series is brilliant for this as if there are any Zombies that are not fully (to quote a currently often used French term) "neutralised" - the L Series "Blooms" will put them under!

And clearly the K16 is even more superior than the L series. My power steering belt is off and the alternator continues to work regardless, all the way up to 7200 PRM (which must be just a dream to those oil engines).

Must be bloody amazing to get it to 7200 when you need to carry 2 x 50 gallon drums of water, Antifreeze, a portable milling machine and full tool kit in the back............:rolleyes: ... .............................:p

I had to search google to find out what a 'pokemon' was lol :) now I understand haha. I presume it is the sort of app 'thing' that K series owners use whilst waiting at the side of the road for the tow truck:oops:

Lol Tony - So, you actually changed the lump to a VVC version ? - what is the actual difference in the lump (apart from VVC of course) ?
A k series that is actually running is a rather good engine - (not of the class, finesse and luxury of an L series of course):p

Hi GG, you are missing out, as much as I love my landy L series (the sheer pinnacle of automotive luxury and refinement - :rolleyes:) . 'GOT' is a treasure to behold. We dont have a TV in the house, just the laptops and tablets and a couple of QNAP NAS units - with - errrr - rather a large selection of 'entertainment'......:oops:

Short version - Yes I did change it. It goes very well.

BTW, you appear to be confused about the K16 engine. Unlike the Oil Burners, it is not a lump. It is less than 100Kg of refined and machined aluminum alloy.
