Hi.
In the last week whilst driving at about 65-70 mph (54 reg Defender Td5) I have experienced brief losses of power. It has only occured in very wet road conditions and whist raining. The roads are only wet and i am not splashing about in puddles!!! The power loss can either be a momemtary "hiccup" and it has also felt like there is no real take up on acceleration. The first time it happened I stopped and checked air intake area for cracked hoses or loose hose clips, and found nothing so worried about it over a cup of tea. Back in the Landy and it drove as per normal for about 5 mins and then same problem until the road was dryer and then normal performace returned.
I have checked under drivers seat for wet ecu plugs but it is as dry as a nun's crotch in there :).
Has anybody else had this problem and found a cure? I have had a search and can't find any other threads which deal with this problem but apologies if I have missed them
Thanks....

Had the same issue with loss of power in the bosses td5 but, does it hiccup as such and how long has this been going on for?

Thanks for your interest JNEC.
It has only happened in the last week. Prior to that there hasn't been any issue and it drives very smoothly. I will try to describe the hiccup ...... doing a constant 70 mph there is a momemtary loss of power then it recovers then it does the same .On slowing down to about 55-60mph there was not the same problem. In dry conditions there is no problem. Thanks

Hmm.. im no td5 expert but it sounds similar to when the td5 packed up at work, listen to the fuel pump, if thats buzzing its on its way out and you will need to replace it.

If its not buzzing, then i have nooo idea

Pretty sure its not the fuel pump as I can drive in the dry without experiencing this problem. Normal fuel pump noise if i turn the ignition to position II for about 30 seconds and then it stops. Certainly can't hear the fuel pump with the engne running. Thanks for your thoughts though..... :D

that noise at position II is the pump priming. -you'll know the sound of a pump on its last legs tho.

have you got underneath + checked the wiring to the pump for chafes where it passes close to the chassis? -maybe some water ingress??

i had the same sort of thing + turned out my fuel pump was on the way out -never had this again once pump replaced.

you could try cleaning the ECU plug / replacing injector loom (£30) too -think this causes hiccups when full of oil
