Hi guys are there 2 types of power boxes egr and non egr and also can anyone reccommend the best one to use or is it better to go the chip route....
Depends on if your Rangie has an EGR or not...!!!
Personally, I wouldn't bother with either a chip or a plug in box, as it will only end up wrecking the Gearbox in the end due to the excess torque created...
Don't forget that in order to increase power in a Diesel you have to inject more fuel, so any mod will only increase fuel consumption....
Plug in devices have the benefit of being able to be unplugged when not needed and also transposed between vehicles if you change to another Diesel P38....a chip is more difficult to remove it at all....
The Diesel is more than capable of shifting when prodded, it is just that the Diesel throttle pedal travel and repsonse is a little odd and may need to be got used to...my DSE would sit up and beg and take off like a scalded whippet when needed...!
If you do want to add a chip or box, make sure your gearbox is in tip top condition and do fluid and filter changes more regularly.
Thanks guys i my self have a manual one and i bought an auto for my dad as he loved mine had to pry keys away from him.. he is getting on auto suits him better. but his is gutless... my friend has an auto with a power box and it makes some difference but his engine and box have only 26k on them.. not bad for 01... but there are different types just wondering whitch was the best my manual is lively so dont know if i would add one to mine if they increase torque and reduce fuel then maybe ...
I'm pretty certain I saw somewhere that the diesel is already tuned higher than it is in the BMW. If true I'm not sure I'd want to push it any higher and Land Rover are a bit infamous for stripping splines / gearboxes when you try shoving too much torque through them!
No need to CHIP.
Think of the throttle like this. The throttle 1st 1/3 of travel is really for off road use. The second 2/3 road use.
Simply work strainght through the first 1/3 of throttle and you will find it will go quite well.
What about getting a uprated torque converter?? there is a company in the states that do them.

BMW 2.5 TDI is 143 BHP 260nm of torque. Goes to 170 BHP and 326 nm with powerbox.
P38 2.5 TDI is 136 BHP 268 nm of torque. Goes to 165 BHP and 319 nm with powerbox.
