hoping this is the 'Place To Be' for LR owners. First post to say 'hi' and ask a few questions as well.
Bit of a Petrolhead and both me and my other half own new BMW M cars (M2 & 3) and have a past history of Audi RS/Alpina/AMG etc (basically I've lost a lot of money on cars but you only live once). We want to get a Winter Car and keep it a few a year or two so are looking for something quite nice. Was looking at VW Touaregs and also RRS (missus had a 2010 RRS for a year and it was a nice place to be). Discounted the LR322 at first due to the reputation for reliability woes but then after doing some digging (Harry Metcalf of EVO Magazine fame does a great review and guide to them at 'Harry's Garage' on Youtube) and have had another look. Budget is £5-7k which gets us a FL 06/7 3.6 TDV8 and we test drove this one yesterday:

Pretty much everything worked fine and there were a few issues such as rust on rear door arches (plenty of rust underneath as well) and the rear wiper seemed jammed. The dealer was ok (they can be such a mixed bag I find) and the car will come with 3 months warranty and it has new tyres (Scorpion Zeros) all round, new front discs and pads and will be serviced by them as well. Partial history and last owner (female) seemed to spend quite a bit of money on it the past two years.Waiting for the rest of the history to come through.

No history though! on My Car Check it shows a pretty clean MOT history and never failed for anything major or any advisories on huge bits. Hesitant to look at one with no history though? Could pull the first 3 years from RR (assuming they would do that-they do it at Audi/ BMW/Mercedes.

Questions to the panel are:
1. Worthwhile purchase? Frankly I loved the car it drove great but there are huge niggling doubts in my mind about buying something that will break down all the time. The Vogue SE spec is brilliant and all the electrics worked fine.
2. Xenons didn't seem as bright as I thought (not as good as on my missus' RRS but that was a FL version). Can they be changed/upgraded at all?
3. At 129,000 miles will any warranty company touch it and if so which one is recommended please?
4. I'm trying to approach this with an open mind-will probably commission a mechanic to do a survey for some piece of mind. In reality are they the wallet draining breakdown nightmare that people talk about or is that from people who never owned one. It's an impressive bit of kit for sure-I'd rather have one of these than a T-Reg but reliability is a big thing.

Iv recently picked up a 4.4 petrol v8 on LPG and love it your looking at td8 which is a decent engine over the td6.

I also know some one selling a mint toureg limited edition that would provide you with better build, toys and reliability in white with chrome pack you pay your money you takes your chance

TDV8s are ok motors but a pain in the rectum if they go wrong
The ZF6hp26 box is good but must be serviced every 60k if not you're asking for trouble and it uses ZF lifegard 6 only!! not dextron..

I'd be more inclined to look at the Jag V8 powered L322.

Same 6hp gearbox but a simpler and more robust engine..

The ZF6hp is a great Gbox and will go on forever if well maintained much better than the gearboxes before

and the same goes for the Jag engine, keep it serviced and you're dialled just watch the valley pipe they tend to go pop at high mileages, tis a 40min job if its the N/A motor

You need to decide what you want? As pointed out earlier.
Doesn’t sound like you are willing to get your hands on spanner’s.
In all our Land Rover ownership and only being left on the side of the road 2 times, we don’t have an issue.
The tdv8 is great but would appear out of your budget.
Our Tdv8 is loved and reliable.
Our P38s well sorted,loved and reliable.
The blue slug (mud ball) is probably not in your thoughts anyway.

The 2 you have listed “look” great. But!! The risk is yours

German engineering is great have had a few of them too.

You will mostly find negative comments/problems on any forum as people generally don’t write “I have just driven 4000km in 5 days and half of that towing an 1800kg trailer,had fun all the way except having to visit the fuel station”

But would I buy a toe rag. Probably not.
You have BMW Ms why aren’t you looking for an X series?

Good luck in your choice but be carful whatever you go for they all have issues if not well kept.

Thanks for the input so far guys very helpful-to answer a few questions:
BMW X5 etc-with our budget I’d be looking at an early model and frankly it’s not a 4 x 4 more an enlarged 5 series with decent road manners. I know a lot of it is about the tyres but X Drive (especially early models) don’t handle well on anything but tarmac. Permanent four wheel drive/Quattro is the master at this and having had all of these at some point it’s the way (literally) forward. Newer versions are smarter and better but way out of budget.
I’ll have to admit I had a few sleepless nights worrying about the Rangey, today i’m off to see another one:

Low miles and also full history and looks pretty tidy. Slightly off budget but worth it for the right car. Think a mechanic survey is definitely advised (although i realise this is not a 100% guarantee it won’t go ‘bang’).

Expect to buy new wheels and tyres for that one, as a 'winter car'
If you're doing it for 'presence' you could buy any make, park it round the corner and just get a Range Rover keyring.

Think you’re getting me wrong here-it’s not about a statement piece or ‘look at me’ quite the opposite in fact. I learned to drive in a Defender in the army back in the day and have spent large parts of my life in 4 x 4’s in varying forms around the globe. If that doesn’t make me a good fit for the LR community then so be it. This is about me parking up my performance car for most of the winter and getting a vehicle that’s comfortable and very capable in adverse conditions as I live out in the countryside in the U.K.
I love what you can get for your money (admittedly a small budget but I’m not going to plough £20k plus into a newer car) and the ride is absolutely fantastic. It’s just a case of finding the right one.

I didnt come across well The difference between the other 90% and myself is that I have had a look at who you are, and you have been found wanting. Your give a certain impression, which is reinforced by your desire for a Range Rover for 'presence' but a reluctance to actually read the threads , written by people who 'own them'.
Instead you want people to answer all your questions, whilst you put no proper effort into research. As such I have decided not to waste my time on you.
In summary, all your initial questions could have been answered, by you making an effort and using the search button. So good luck to those who wish to do all the work for you. However, I find laziness and entitlement , offensive and as such cant be bothered with you.

Firstly , there is no LR322. It is a Range Rover L322. Ok now that is out of the way.....
1: a: Only you know what is worth while to you. A £5-7k budget should also have a £2k repairs fund sitting in the bank, just in case.
b: Read the threads. They break down , with reliable frequency. Then again most 11 or 12 yr old vehs will break down. The more toys, the more there is to go wrong. If you're already worried then perhaps it is not for you.
2: No comment, on the having not seen the veh in question or the previous RRS.
3: No idea but as most warranties arent worth the paper they are written on , especially for such an old vehicle, best to save your money and pay a good, independent, specialist.
4: Read the threads, again. 98% are written by people who 'own them'. Yes , they are wallet draining*, parts are not cheap. Or more to the point, decent parts are not cheap. If reliability is utmost , then green oval should be low on the list. If a vehicle which , when running perfectly, is the best at what it does, fantastic to be in, comfortable and likely to get under your skin, so you never want to be without it, is what you want , then it should be at the top of your list.

* I find it becoming more and more pertinent, that the first part of my signature be pushed in the faces of prospective new owners

Coming across as an obnoxious pr1ck though? Not so cool. Especially when it comes to straight away going for a personal attack. Speaks volumes about someone’s character. All while hiding behind a keyboard (how very....millenial). From my side of the fence that usually calls for a ‘1 metre/t-wall interview’. And apparently that’s par for the course on here. Well I’ll lurk and do the odd post but have to say not the most impressive welcome and everyone brings something to the party. Odd.
As before-thanks to those who have actually been half pleasant and helpful to someone new to this community.

Ignore Goldy. It has a high opinion of itself. It's standard practice. Retort then tell you yer on ignore so it can't see what yer post. It's chip knows no bounds. I was told I'm on ignore. Dun't bother me.

Have a look round the forum at typical faults. Think about those faults and cost of repair. Make a list of what to look out for on the model yer want to buy as many are sold on when repairs start to get a bit too much. Factor in if yer can do the work yerself. After about 10 years or high miles they have collected a lot of faults which need sorted. Most owners dun't keep them int top condition.

Lz can be a bit tough at times. Anything Goes section is where we have our arguments. We allow pompous wind bags to post anywhere ont forum but language needs to be good mannered. Yer can swear int Anything Goes but not anywhere else. Int general the forum is relaxed and most of us dun't take ourselves too seriously. There's always one willing to spoil things.

Oops nearly fergot. If yer want a reliable land rover product with the luxury of a range rover but a fraction of the price...










Get yerself a Freelander

Thanks for the input so far (apart from the keyboard commando) and have now sourced a well cared for low mileage Vogue SE on a Dec 2006 build and 90% main dealer FSH and low miles. Compared to the other one I viewed its in great nick so ‘appears’ to have been well looked after. All going well should pick it up just after Xmas due to being away.

I owned a V10 RS6 so am well versed in a wallet draining motor (the saying is ‘the only thing they can’t get past is a petrol pump). Absolute legendary motor though (always great to have a 5 litre twin turbo V10).
Looking forward to the new beast...the ride comfort is something else.
