Debating replacing the rear cross member on my 300Tdi. I bought the Defender nearly 6 months ago, and I knew the existing rear cross member has had a few welding plates on it. However, I bought it to tow an exhibition trailer around with (nearly 2 tons loaded) and am dubious whether it's up to the job.

With a new rear cross member available for circa £150, can anyone estimate how long a professional mechanic might need or the cost to fit it please?

I have searched and read other related threads on similar subjects, but have failed to find the answers I am looking for prior to considering doing it.

Appreciate any advice or input....

I would quickly give Clive a call at Blacksheep before he shuts up shop for good. Without any question, his products are far above other inferior items on the market. In my opinion he's both a highly skilled fitter and manufacturer of Landy Crossmember's.

Basically.....:BEST IN THE BUSINESS!!! Give him a call!

it doesn't look that bad, if you can I would add the extra 4 bolts into the nato holes and fit the matching spreader on the other side, also remove the alloy spacer or replace it with a steel one
 
So was I! :) That's a problem with emails and forums - very easily misconstrued at times, which is why emoticons "can" sometimes come in useful
 
its had a fair bit of plating. If your consistently towing with it i would consider replacing. Looks like it has had plates on plates which is bad news

Black sheep will sort you out with the best crossmember available, do not fit a standard or britpart one
 
No seriously though, any welded crossmember raises questions if you intend towing to any great degree. Personally I prefer to air on the side of caution and would have a new one fitted if money was not an issue. Give Clive a call, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.! :)
 
Personally I'd bite the bullet and get it done,

As for time wise took my garage an afternoon to get it done

if it was mine..

depending on how long you want to keep it, i'd leave the patch and get a galved chassis or if you want to just replace it, then go with pressbrakes cross member. he's in essex iirc, so if you go that way book it in for him to do.

he would probably ship you out a member for you to get fitted locally.

going on the state of your rear-x-member whats the rest of your chassis like?
