Posted earlier tonight regarding my starter motor just clicking, and a tap with a hammer doing the trick.

I forgot to mention that the first time this happened, when i got back in the car and put the key in the ignition, turned it I had no alumination on the the dash at all, as if the car was dead.

I then shut my door rather harder than normal in frustration lol when i tried again everything was back to normal. this happened on another two occasions.

Anyone have any ideas on this one? I dont want to fork out for a new starter if this is possibly not the problem, i am usless with electrics, but owning my second rangey i am willing to learn and have a go at anything.

Thanks Regards Mike

check for loose connections on your starter / battery/ earth problems could also cause trouble. As regards tapping starter it would seem like starter brushes could be a problem

Have you got your EKA code?
If not, get that now before you do anything else.
Disconnect your battery.
Check, clean and tighten the wiring contacts to your starter.
Clean and re-connect your battery.

Rotten / dirty / loose contacts at the starter can prevent enough power getting through to operate the starter.

Check the underbonnet fuse box for signs and smells of burning, especially check relays 6 & 7 and the ignition and fuel pump relays. Fuse box failures are a common cause of strange happenings.

Well chaps, Thanks to your ideas i think i have cured my problem, Fingers Crossed!!!!
The threaded bolt on the solonoid was loose. I stareted checking the cables as suggested. As i went to undo them it became apparant this bolt had movement. Took the nut off and the wires, where i found a backing nut. Proceeded to tighten said nut, cleaned the terminals, put nut back on, nipped up tight and Hey presto she jumped into life. I also noticed the starter seems to be turning at double speed now, ie how it should be, That will save my poor battery.

Thanks very much for your input.

Mike
