Hello all,

I have only just recently bought a TD5 disco and have been feeling that it's not as quick as it should be. Now my was 4x4 was a V8 and quick. So I first thought that I just needed to get used to the diesel disco. However it still seems too slow and I can't really feel the turbo kicking in at all.

So today I tested the 0 to 60 with a handy phone app. On all my there cars it has been very accurate. To within a fraction of a second to what it should have been.

This revealed that the 0 to 60 time was about 19 seconds!!!! I was not expecting a rocket ship but hunk it should be a lot quicker than that.

I have checked the actuator is free and tried a test run without the MAF Sensor attached. Detaching the MAF made no difference. I also gave it a liberal spraying of carb cleaner.

I am wondering if he boost modulator is at fault and am coincide ring by passing it? Until I can get a new one.

Just wondering if here is anything else I should try or am I expecting too much from the disco

Auto or man? Manuals are a few secs quicker to 60.
Firstly, i would check intercooler hoses for condition/holes/attached properly etc.

It's a manual. I do t think the pipes are leaking as I have driven cars with leaking pipes before and can normally hear it hissing out. I will check them though tomorrow morning.

I have boost guage from and old turbo car. I might try and fit this to check on the boost pressure.

When the D2 was introduced the manual Td5 was road tested 0-60mph at 14.2 sec and auto at 15.8 sec. The V8 was 10.9 and 11.9sec.

So mine is a fair bit off that pace then. The acceleration just seems so very flat can't even tell when the turbo comes in.

Try changing the turbo hoses for silicones if they have not been done recently. They de-laminate internally with age, although you won't be able to tell as it will only happen when the turbo is trying to suck.

Another cause could be a blocked cat. Try a de-cat pipe. When I removed mine I propped it upright and a lump of coal fell out of it! Started it up after fitting the de-cat pipe and the first thing I noticed was the sound of the turbo whistling away. Performance was much better.

Remember that those 0-60 times are for brand new motors, but with a little work you can get yours pretty close to as new performance.

I'm now off to get a new control valve and will the. Be cleaning the MAP sensor. I will update any results later.

BTW this is the results from the 0 60 test

It's a 2001 model.

Just had out the map sensor and it was filthy!!

This has now been cleaned and re fitted. Also changed the boost control value too......

Time for a test drive....

Could also be a stuck/faulty EGR if it's still fitted.

Also probably worth checking where how many threads visible on the wastegate actuator arm, it's not uncommon for the arm to be too long and boost never getting a chance to come on enough.

Found something odd with the egr. The pipe that goes to the top of it has been removed and a rubber blank put on it instead? However the system does not look like it has been blanked off

So I've still been tinkering with the truck as it still seems a bit to slow.

I've removed the egr checked the hoses for delamination, cleaned the MAF sensor again and changed the gearbox ATF,, checked the injector harness, but it still feels to slow.

It feels like the engine is revving but the power is not getting to the wheels, like the torque convertor is slipping to much if that possible?

Errrrr is it a manual gearbox or auto gearbox car - I'm confused?

Dave

it has an automatic gearbox and I'll change the ATF. When I'm driving at the disco if I accelerate the revs pick up as normal but If I the presse the pedal more the engine revs rise more but the car doesn't seem to go any faster. It just revs more like the torque is not making it to the wheels. The kick down works fine and if I keep pressing the pedal it will kick down but that simply means more revs and still very little progress
