Hi everyone wondering if anyone has had the same problem and what outcome did you do to fix.
Problem is if I park facing up hill (even if its a small slope ) after an hour engine won't fire up.
I have changed fuel filter/fuel pump/and added a new non return valve and air bleeding valve by the filter even though it never had one for the last 6 years. Injector seals have been done as well. Its starts perfectly on the flat and front parked down hill. ?????Any other ideas I have missed. Td5 engine.

Any leaks in your pipework from the engine backwards?

Does completing the purge procedure fix the issue?

Cheers

I can't see any leaks or wet patches and tried purging but the only way I can start it is getting it flat and constantly turning it over then it will start. Forgot to say fuel pressure reg is new aswell

So even with using the purge procedure a few times it will not start when facing uphill?

Cheers

Yes tried it 2 or 3 times but no joy pump is running for 30 secs but its as if the fuel is draining back to the tank and pumps not strong enough to pump up hill yet when its running work perfect. Any steep hill

I would have thought the difference between uphill and on the flat is neglible regarding the pressure required.

But if the fuel is running back maybe that is where the issue lies if the pump is knackered, you can have a pump running but unless you have checked the high pressure side is working correctly then maybe it is only running not pumping correctly. If that makes sense.

Have you checked the fuel pressure at the FPR?

Cheers

No. I haven't checked that. whats the best way of checking that. taking off the feed pipe. (I fitted a new pump because of this but I suppose the new pump could be faulty)

You can check the pressure at the FPR, it is written about in the RAVE manual. I would be surprised if you have a new pump ( sorry missed that in the list of things you have changed) and it is knackered.

Another thing, have you checked the fuel filter housing? they are notorious for becoming porous over time.

Also worth looking at are the Landrover toolbox videos about bad starting TD5 engines on You Tube there are iirc 4 of them on there.

Cheers

Curiosity, how much fuel do you normally have in the tank?
Does the problem appear whether full, or low fuel in tank?
Just another thought

On a side note, does it also cut out when you put it under heavy heavy load in 4th/5th gear? Say above 2500-3000 revs full throttle for about 20-30 seconds? (and by cut-out, I mean dies and leave you stranded trying to get it started)

No it runs great just come back from the highlands to northwales 7hrs none stop. I am just concerned about which way I park when I stop for more than 20 mins.

My guess is that there is a very tiny leak in the system, possibly so tiny it won't let fuel out but will let air in and the fuel drains back to the tank.
Have a s cond real close look with a good torch for the smallest leaks.
Be very me methodical, replace all copper washers and olives on every pipe joint keep an eye out for PTFE tape, everything needs to be 110%
If pipes look iffy replace them.

Yes I agree I might just replace all the fuel lines anyway, if one part is deteriated other parts will be. Just need to find a couple of days when I am not busy.

it might be worth looking at the pump the pump sits in plastic sleeve/pot that has a rubber one way valve that allows fuel in but not out, unless the pot is full pump will be struggling for fuel when tank is at lower fuel levels or angles facing up toward the front of the vehicle, if the valve leaks the pot will constantly empty

Can you tell me what I am looking for with the one way valve. I am looking at a pump drawing and nothing labeled as one way valve.

on th bottom of the pump unit you can see part of the filter screen if you unclip and slide that off you can see the orange valve its just a circular rubber flap, or its easier to see if you unclip the pot and slide it off you need to unclip level gauge first though, the plastic housing you see houses the pump holds a filter screen and is the fuel pot, without a pot pump would scavenge air at low tank levels or on slopes
