That's what I was assuming. If the FIP is working, even at 50% efficiency, then more than a drip should come from the injector pipe. The fuel pressure entering the FIP, from the fuel filter, is under huge pressure. That's what makes me think it's the FIP at fault. If it was timing, surely some fuel would exit the injector pipe, just in the wrong order/sequence.

What should I try/start with?
undo front banjo bolt on injection pump , work lift pump or turn engine over with stop solenoid wire off if should pour out with no air ( a clear plastic pipe placed between front banjo bolt and filter is a good diagnostic tool for checking air in system) but slackening bolt can be useful too, if it looks like air check all pipe connections, then replace lift pump, if thats good remove solenoid (15/16 or 24mm spanner i have a cut up and ground down one i made for the job? take plunger a spring out and refit and try engine running(whilst out look inside pump for fillings a sign pumps failing)

Gents, I'm a tit. I started at the start, checking for fuel leaks from the tank. I got right up to the filter and realised the fuel flow had stopped. Went back to the start, empty tank! **** sake!

Fuel gauge is stuck on 1/2 tank, but I didn't check the mileage. It had done 427.9 on that tank. Note to self, refill at 400miles! Sorry all, thanks for the help.

:DMaybe, but i think it would be better as a secret society ;) - save everyone else from taking the p*ss:D

and FIX your fuel gauge !!

It was a tractor i used to run out of fuel - it didn't have a gauge, (still doesn't!), :confused:so I guess i have an "excuse"

I need a new gauge. The sender unit was replaced before I bought it (I have the receipt for it), so I would imagine the gauge is shot. I want to do the TD5 dash upgrade anyway, so I have an excuse to replace it now.

So the diagnosis of air in the fuel was wrong, you actually had a bit of fuel in your air pipe :D:D
Yeah, that's more the final conclusion. You should have seen my face when I realised the tank was empty. The lying ****ing fuel gauge! I will never believe it again.

Ive ran my 200 out of fuel many times! chuck some in the tank and wang it over, it starts and keeps on running with zero issues.

400 miles form a defender tank is pretty good going.

I always carry a spare 5litre can of fuel in the back of all my motors.

That's not a bad idea. I'm tempted with an aux wheel arch tank to be honest. I get my diesel quite cheap, so I make the most of it.

To be fair, once I stuck 20l in it from the Jerry can, it turned over a few times and it couched and spluttered, then fired up and ran like a champ.
