Was driving home last night and loud noises came from under car and it started to slow down so stoped went to take away and could not backed up a loud banging noise started but it would let me drive on a few more feet till it locked up got pushed on by defender it unjamed but got towed clear of traffic and turned of engine restarted it now noises have gone but the drive still seems tight what could the cause of this its a 2.5 auto

Yep, I agree, same happened to 1 of my p38, had to replace the chain, otherwise you'll end up grinding the teeth down on the sprockets, and you wouldn't want that! Usually happens when you accelerate too fast when pulling a heavy load (trailer), that's what happened to mine!
Sounds more like chain jumping teeth in transfer box.
Nothing of a job if you have a ramp and all the gear. On your back on the drive a bastard job.

If it's the transfer box, no need to disturb the gearbox itself, just take the transfer box off. Maybe there is no oil in it
