Have any of you guys done Northern portugal i hear the forests and mountains are spectacular

Bobliving in the Central region of Portugal I can reccomend this area for laning and holidays, we have over 1,500km of lanes to play on, up in the mountains or in the valleys. Campsites are available in this region and most are run by Brits or Dutch also camping available on my land. Fuel is cheap!!!

Won't even comment on "poor country" but am curious about what you found expensive here?
Back on topic, the North of Portugal is a beautiful land, well worth visiting and travelling off-road. Food is great too and the weather is very good (in comparison).
Can't really agree with bmp42 about fuel price's though (remember to fill the tanks just before leaving Spain

Half of Portugal work here in France in the building trade and also refer to their country as poor! (i.e not wealthy)
We found most campsites very expensive,food & drink,restaurants were out of the question and what ****ed me off the most was on every motorway tole they were making us pay more for our 110sw than the cars!
I was talking about fuel price in comparison the the UK not Spain (yes i fill up in spain whenever I can). tolls might be on the main autoroutes but if you look at the maps you will see that the old national routes run alongside and they are not toll roads - easy on the map -anything with a A before the number is a toll road N is national road. We only have one toll road that we use and that is to Porto airport and that is only 11€ for over 150kms of very good autorute. Eating out is very cheap and if you watch where the locals go then it is even cheaper, just be aware that the desserts can be more expensive than the main meal.

Fair do's! Still ****es me off though that my 110 passes for a car on the tole roads in France & Spain and then get hammered for a lorry in Portuagal

I'm not that much of a "tight arsed git" !! at certain toll's car in front for example would pay 3.2 euro & we got charged 5.3 euro !!!

I've been to Galicia in north west spain (Santiago de Compostela, A Coruna) a couple of times. Fantastic scenery but i didnt take the landy so i cant comment on off road & camping etc

Most people who migrate to France come from a poor background, so it's expected that they see/comment Portugal as being poor. Life was hard for them here, enough to drive them away
The different toll prices try to reflect a simple principle: you drive a bigger vehicle, you pay more. Most 4x4's get caught in this rule. The biggest price difference between Class 1 and 2, that I know of, is in both bridges around Lisbon (25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama) where a Class 2 vehicle pays more than double of a Class 1 (2.35€ vs 5.30€ in Vasco da Gama, IIRC).
I can't comment on camping prices/facilities, because I never camped outside Portugal. As always, there are good spots and bad spots. The internets will be your friend in assessing this.
Also, we have 2 landy oriented forums, which may be of help: http://www.forumlandrover.org (currently down) and LandMania Clube de Portugal • Index page. Lots of friendly people, who will certainly help a fellow LR enthusiast if you have any problems around here.
