Hi

New to this forum but thought someone out there may be able to help.

My 1998 4.6 HSE with LPG conversion is pressurising excessively and blowing coolant out of the reservoir. So far not too badly, a pint or so every few days. I'm told by an independent land rover specialist (who didn't like LPG at all) that it has a porous block and about £4-5k should put it right.

I've seen porous block sealant advertised on places like ebay and really can't believe that it is any good but am tempted for the small outlay of £30-40.

Anyone had any experience of this type of thing??

i ain't never heard of no pourous block nor head cepting maybe on car sales men. yer maun's probelly right with his pouros head gasket though, i'd give that a try first. rush out and buy yerself a compression tester first chance you get.
 
Not sure if anyone is interested but I used some stuff called Ceramic Engine Sealant from the states and my RR hasn't used any water since (so far!!) It was previously using a pint or so every few days maybe a week.

Didn't ascertain where the problem was but so far this looks like a much cheaper repair than a new engine!!

Have used something similar on an old Disco V8. It was smoking white plumes so bad that as one of my step-children put it "The cars behind are putting their fog lights on!" Stuck it in the coolant and ran the engine for 10 mins per cylinder, taking one spark plug out at a time, hour and a half later I flushed it out and put new coolant in, never had a problem again until I sold it. Superb stuff!

Also used similar product in an old Citroen for a coolant leak in the radiator - did it in Halfords car park! Again, fantastic results.
 
i tried similar on me jag and it didn't work. it was susposed to seal blown head gaskets but all it did was gum up th ecoolant system. it took me ages to flush all the stuff out.
on the porous block side i would have thought if you did have a 'porous bloke', (which i have never seen in years of working with car,trucks, tanks, boats and most anything with an engine,) i would put it down to bad materials and you should have some comeback with the engine builders whether rover or anybody else.
but the main thing is its fixed now, just watch the system don't get clogged
 
Yeah, you have to be very careful using it, as I recall, it reacts with coolant products and can block the system, so you have to make sure the system is completely flushed through (I think I did it at least twice) with pure water before putting the stuff in, and then the same afterwards before filling with coolant again.

As for the porus block, I believe the problem was caused by poor material choice, but can't remember exactly. BMW had a similar problem with some of their straight sixes and the liners, they agreed to warranty the affected engines to 100k, but that was it.
 
i stuck a hose in the system and back flushed it for about 45mins and it still clogged up. i woulmd just advise caution to any one thinking about using the stuff
 
it is possible but unlikely, id do your headgaskets and also check to make sure your heater matrix o-rings arnt leaking need any more help just mail me
