olla' :)

just a quicky really. ive just put a twin air horn onto my 1984 90 in place of the original and after giving it a test "honk" it blows a fuse. the test honk was carried out while the ignition was off if this makes any diff.

the original horn only had one wire. i connected this to the air compressor and wired in an earth to the body. i was just wondering if ive done anything wrong. ive also replaced the fuse with a 15amp rather than a 10 as i didnt have any of these available at the time.

are popping fuses from time to time normal or is there something seriously wrong with my electrics?

cheers

th new horn draws more amps than the old horn, hence it pops the fuses, or another theory is that you have made a bollocks of the wiring causing a short ;)

:( dont think ive made a bollocks of the wiring... there are only 2 wires! maybe i should wire in a relay. so ive got an earth and what must be a live. were do i connect the other 2 terminals ormus? i didnt want a switch, i just wanted to use my exisiting stalk.

while im here :) do you guys know if the interior dash bulbs are wired in series? i ordered 3 LED bulbs but on taking it apart found 2 in the speedo. i replaced 3 of the blown bulbs. and have one original left in. i cant get them to work. if i get another new bulb, will this solve it? or is my wiring "Bollocks'd" so to speak.

PS. the dash bulbs have never worked since ive had it. i was just trying to make it right again :(

cheers!

Hi, If you look at the relay it should have a diagram with numbers on it.

If you connect the feed from your staulk (Original feed to horn) to the relay switch side and the other side to earth and then use the other side of the relay for switching you live feed to your air horns

When you operate the horn via the staulk it in turn operates the relay which then makes the circuit giving power to your horns

Relay
87 Power Positive (+) From battery - Fused
86 Ignition Switch (+) Staulk
30 Out put to Air Horns (+)
85 Ground (-)
87A Is not being used - Center Pin

Hope this helps and Good Luck

but i only have one wire from the original horn which acts as the power supply and switch... i will try and wire this up at some time. am i correct in assuming that a relay acts as an extra fuse?

any thoughts on my dash bulbs?

no, the relay is a powered switch. it doesnt have an internal fuse, so make sure the feed wire is fused. the switch wire should be fused already.

not sure about your dash problem. not enough info.

Right mate here we go.

On a standard Relay you find these in most cars at the scrappy there are 4 terminals 5 but ignore the middle one. You will see a diagram on the side of the relay like the pic I have just drawn for ya. Below.

If you look at the terminal on the relay you will see 85 86 87 30

Terminal 30 needs a fuse and then to go to a +12v supply like your battery. This can also be got from the large 13mm nut on the back of the starter. There are a few places it can be found. FUSE has to be inline on this wire or you are very silly if ya dont.

Terminal 87 needs to go to your + on the air horns.

Terminal 85 needs to be your + wire from the horn switch or the one you put on the air horn + in the first place.

Terminal 86 needs to go to an Earth or - if there was one on the back of the horn in the first place this will be fine.

This is your comon 12volt 30Amp Relay.

Hope this helps
