Hi all

My 300Tdi has recently developed a popping noise whilst running which increase in speed when the engine is revved. I found a gas leak from the rear right hand side of the engine and thought it was the exhaust manifold gasket as there is a defiant smell of exhaust fumes.

I have replaced the exhaust gasket and it is still there, could it be the head gasket? i have checked the usual tell tails (mayo in the oil, coolant tank bubbling) and have found no signs of anything wrong.

If it is the head will i need to get it tested and re-skimmed? (i had this done approximately a year ago as it failed then (coolant system over pressurised with exhaust gasses).

very possible they rarely give water in oil symptoms,if head has lifted again without obvious cause ie poor fitting or parts, split hose poor rad,etc then i would fit new head ,if skimmed to remove warping it might have been hot enough to relax and will move again, however many times you reskim it
