I am having problems with my disco. I changed the fuel filter and ever sinve then i've had nothing but trouble.
It started mis firing so I took it to a so called specialist who fitted a new injector. It ran fine for a while then did the same again so I had another injector fitted.
After that it began starting badly so i took it to another so called specialist who charged me an abolute fortune to not fix it. All they did was put another fuel filter on and a new fuel pressure regulator which didn't fix it.
I then decided to have a look myself and eventually found that the only way to cure it was to remove the small air bleed valve from the return on the filter housing. Unfortunately this only helps as long as I keep the tank at least half full. I also put a new fuel pump in.
Has anyone experienced this problem?

Have you checked for oil in the injector harness? It's a common fault which usually when the engine's warm. It can do it when cold though.

Were the injector seals fitted properly? if they seal is leaking the injector can't get up to pressure as fast.

Check the fuel filter housing hasn't got a crack in it.

It's also worth checking the fuel pipes as they have a tendancy to rub through on the chassis.

My money is on an injector washer.

Changed the injector seals and o rings, no change. Forgot to mention that it only does it when the fuel level goes below quarter of a tank:mad:

In that case, it sounds like you have a pin hole in the fuel pick up of yoour fuel sender unit. When the fuel drops below a certain level it can suck in air.

But i've put a new fuel pump in, can it be that its faulty too?

That doesn't mean it can't draw in air from somewhere. It may even be that while you were changing the pump, you accidently caused a pipe to rub through. I can't say for certain that's what it is but from your description and that it only does it when the fuel is below a certain level that is what it sounds like.

Hi, Ainsley did you find solution to this as i,ve got exact same problem, pump started gurgling whilst on holiday in april managed to get car and caravan home without problem then car broke down completely a few days later, Fitted new fuel pump and filter and everything fine until fuel level got to around a quarter at which point pump again started gurgling topped up with fuel and everything fine then again this morning car started but fuel pump noisy then misfired and stopped again fuel level at quarter. Removed pump checked all connections and pipes put pump back in primed again then car restarted, after running for a while i,ve left it while football on then gone to restart and again fuel pump is gurgling but car started and ran lumpy for a few seconds then pump went quiet and engine ran smooth again. Totally out of ideas now

what have you done to try and rectify it so far?

Hi ratty the problem only occurs when fuel level is at quarter or below which leads me to think that the problem must be inside the tank i have however changed fuel filter again just to be sure i,ve also checked the security and tightness of all pipework from the sender unit to the pump itself. When i changed pump i only changed the electric pump unit not the complete sender as eurocarparts sell just the pump considerably cheaper than a complete unit, my next plan of action is to change the 3 small pipes from the plastic sender unit to the electric pump for fuel grade rubber and see if that works, I would buy a complete new unit but i don,t really want to part with another load of cash until i know thats the cause. The really annoying thing is the original pump wasn't even faulty it was the fuel filter that had failed.

Ok, so mine just started doing this this morning! Its always when you are on your way to an appointment. I ruled out glow plugs cause it struggled again after having been left 5 mins, but still hot as I'd just done 30 miles. will go and fill up and see what happens. its just gone to half a tank today. Oh forgot to mention, the guy I bought it from a few weeks back had said he just had a new sender unit fitted into the tank so someone has been there recently. Will keep you posted.

Hi There.
Bin here done all this , new filter-->new pump-->new O rings

still wouldnt start under 1/3 tank

You said
"remove the small air bleed valve from the return on the filter housing"

This was the key thing--> I replaced this air bleed valve now it is all fine.

If you didnt replace the bleed valve when you removed it, it wont start under 1/3 tank.

With mine its now been 18months - 30000 miles problem has not returned.
I actually replaced the whole filter housing but did back track to identify the problem as the bleed valve.
