Hello again,
Just an update on the running issue. It turns out that the new Bosch Maf sensor was faulty! Another Bosch Maf is fitted now & it runs as sweet as it should, lots of power & no surging. Just my luck to get a dodgy part! Anyway, very pleased it's fixed. Just ordered a new gkn viscous & gkn bearings, thought I've replaced nearly everything else on the car so might as well finish it off since it's still original. Hoping for a fairly trouble free 2016 from now on, fingers & everything else crossed. Thanks again for all your help, really appreciate it.

Glad its sorted, its a real swine when a new part fails or has the same fault as it really throws you.
Way back did full service on a Mini for a customer and it kept cutting out after the service, wait 2-3 mins and off she would go again. I guessed it was the new condensor so replaced it. Fault stayed the same. changed loads of parts I had as spares and simply could not get rid of the fault.
Eventually borrowed a mates mini and just kept swapping parts, it was the second new condenser.
I had bought two dodgy new condensers in a row, 70p parts cost me hours of work and frustration

This morning I noticed my TD4 surging slightly at about 2000 RPM under light throttle. Works perfectly other than this surging at 2K when cruising. Looking like I'll be unplugging the MAF too.

mine does this aswell its done it for the last 3 years and if you hold it at 2000rpm in neutral it smokes bad , but nothing with normal driving ,so i dont hold it at 2000 rpm ,just drive it ,enjoy it ,mine goes like a train and regularly tows 1500kgs with no probs , seems a lot of td4 s do this

I don't think it should surge and I can't think it'll do the auto box much good either. It's something that I'll have to investigate and resolve.

Mine ran OK with the maf unplugged, but it did rattle a bit & sounded harsh under load due to the over fueling. Running much sweeter with the new maf. My local landy specialist (maltings off road, doncaster) said bosch every time, just a shame I got a bad one to start with! Good luck & hope u get it sorted.

The BMW ECU coders are obviously work very differently to VW ECU coders!

as i said normal driving its absolutely no probs cant tell, its as if it only does it with the throttle held in one position as if its getting confused .

That's what it feels like to me. Like the ECU isn't to sure exactly how much fuel to put in and when. It reminds me of a lean misfire that used to trouble SU carburettors on cold icy mornings if you pushed the choke in to early.
Mine feels quite bad but I suspect that my engine tie bar bushes are slack, exaggerating the feeling of surging.
I will get to the bottom of this however.

Morning, just thought I'd let u know the surging issue returned a few days ago! Took it into pk automotive in Lincoln for full diagnostic test, he had it 3 days & nothing showed up! It ran perfect every road test! After a long discussion about my symptoms, & due to it only occurring after a good run, he said I'm sure it's egr valve. Bought a bypass tube for it & it's got a new pair of lungs, done 300 miles & not a flutter, runs beautiful. Fixed at long last!!

Glad you got sorted, strange how others have still got their fault when they have had the egr mod fitted, it could be they need to change their mafs as well ?
It could be a duff maf to start that allowed the egr to stick or get clogged, or the other way around, what ever it is who knows

I only noticed mine missing at 2K after I'd disabled my EGR valve. My MAF is definitely giving variable signals on the live data too. I'm going to check through the whole system carefully. Additionally I'm running a fuel system cleaner through it too.

I didn't know there was a 2000Rpm syndrome?
Whatever is the cause, I don't like it. Oddly it didn't do it this morning.
I believe most do it to a greater or lesser extent. Mine only does it at 2000rpm 5th gear and going downhill. Not on the flat or going uphill?? But it's only a very slight blip, so I'm not that concerned at the mo. Mike

I have read a lot of stuff on TD4 engine fuel management and how it all comes together, but still this engine smoke when cold and a blip, misfire or shudder at 2000rpm still baffles me how lots of you are still getting this after changing just about everything and then it hit me, the TD4 will open the EGR valve in temperatures below 4 degrees so the engine will breath hot exhaust gasses for it to warm up quickly, if you have a out of spec ambient temperature sensor that is showing colder than what it really is, hence opening the EGR valve this might be the cause.... well you never know ? Please correct me if I'm wrong but clutching at straws for you lot.
you will need to plug your FL into a diagnostic machine and check the temperature that is being read by the freelander sensor and compare it with a thermometer placed in the engine bay close to the one on the FL
