Buy or blag a replacement lift-pump, they're as cheap as chips and it'll answer that question.

Any play in the turbo ?

Having more thinking...dangerous I know...

Timing still might be the thing, but the smoke gets better...

as if the fuel is getting past unburnt when the engine is cold...

then as it warms...is better...

Does the white smoke smell of fuel ?

Is the pulley on the crank loose?

If the woodruff key and or keyway is a bit worn / knacked it can put the timing out 'a bit'.

Can't see it being the lift pump as it can only be over-fuelling or poor combustion.

Considering everything else you've checked I can only think it's FIP/timing

Personally I agree. Problem is its usually the last thing to be checked cos most people don't have the tools. I think it has to be done you may find the belts on its last legs or wear in something. White smoke tends to be from poor combustion. When I've had issues with it, it's been horrendous when cold but clears as you drive and the engine heats up. If it cools down it smokes again! I've been around the houses trying to find the cause, tried everything I was told to by all sorts of people, in the end I ran out of things to try. I got the tools set the timing (it was out) then tried it. It was perfect!
Timing seems to be the most popular choice, assuming you can borrow the tools it's free to check! If you find it's out I'd then be asking why?

Well timing well out. Need to get bottom pulley off got bolt out ( wow that was tight) but struggling to get the pulley off tryed knocking it pulling leave ring it. But still no joy. Any words of wisdom out there. Please.

Good that you've found something conclusive:) maybe I'm just lucky but they've always come of for me with gentle tapping with a copper hammer whilst pulling the opposite side! Or they're so scared they jump off;)

Got it off. And broke it. Lol. New pulley and damper now needed. Timing is well out. So new cambelt and tentioners and diners crossed will have one perfect tdi.

sorry to hear it broke but at least you can get job done now.
RE your location, if you put donncaster in your profile it shows on any post, makes life easyer. several members near you so help probably around if you ask.:D

Clean the crank and the inside of the pulley and put a thin smear of grease on, makes it pop of easily next time.
Proper puller kits on e bay 50 quid, pretty good come with timing pins etc.
