Hi guys,
I gather air suspensions is a somewhat 'lively' topic on the forum and some newbies distinguish themselves by asking those who know to reinvent the wheel for them when a comprehensive manual has been offered to avoid duplication and time wasting.

So, with some trepidation, I offer up my situation and hope for a word from the wise.

Prudence- our Disco 2 Td5 is our only car and my work(horse) vehicle, so one dark bleak morn when I found her slumped in the carpark doing a broke-back badger impression, I was underwhelmed.

This was before I'd availed myself of the forum, but was aware that airbags could be tricksie and had been advised to bin em for coils at the first sign of misbehaviour. A friend recommended someone who came de-bagged her, coiled her up and reprogrammed her brain for a shifty 250.

Problem solved? Well...

A few days later the battery was dead in the morn so I went back to the man who washed his hands, said naught could be attributed to him as all was well. So, I went to the idiots bible- YouTube, which sent me to check for a parasitic drain... Non-found, a coincidental battery death. Replaced.

No problems for a month or two, then a few days not using the truck, flat battery.

Further head scratching until I happened to be furtling around the truck whilst she was turned off and locked and I heard a weird click, which I noticed repeated several times a minute. I surmised that whilst the brain thought no compressor existed, it was still frequently 'checking in'.

Ok, time for faith in a higher power. I sought a dedicated forum, here, then tried to do my homework. I've read all the threads that seemed relevant, took the imparted wisdom, removed fusible link 9 and still have a lonely compressor keen to eat the last reserves of my new and nearly dead battery.

I'd like to have my working out checked and ask if the de-baggers might have a) done something stooped b) acted precipitously and if I might check if the compressor still lives without the use of a brain box. And, would a return to air be advantageous plus problem solving...

I leave it in the hands of the wise.

Hi Wockers,

So have you completed a thorough parasitic drain test recently ?

You say you heard a click, where from?

Was the "brain" changed from air to springs in the settings?

can you find someone local who has a diagnostic system to verify it was changed?

Had you left the motor for similar periods with no ill effects?

What battery did you have fitted? CCA? AH? brand new?

Cheers

Smash that compressor thing with a hammer.
Propah tratters don't need such tosh and I don't understand it either.
Smash it and free yourself from this modern scurge of DIY delanerlings .

Have you finished that garage yet..?????? If not shut up and go back and finish it......:D:D:D.....Or you will not be allowed to come and play at LZ13....:p:p

Cheers

Neilly,
Thanks for the swift response.

Parasitic drain test not performed since strange clicking observed.

Click coming from Wabco box under passenger seat (external).

I believe that she was reprogrammed for springs as there have been no warning lights in evidence and I was told she had been...(?!)

Apart from approaching an unknown quantity commercial vehicle electrician, I don't know anyone with a brainwash box.

Prior to de-bagging, she's been left for up to a week or more and still always started (on original battery no less!)

I'll have to check on the battery, but from memory, same CCA, slightly lower Ah and yeas, brand new bought on a model search from Alpha batteries on Tinterweb.

Nice looking 90 BTW

I hate to say "I told you so", but there are those who think that both the air suspension system and that the Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) are the work of the devil and should be torn out at the earliest opportunity and buried as deep as possible so they'll never be seen again.
Your "mate" who "kindly" introduced you to the bloke told you that your Disco should be on coils hasn't done you any favours I'm sorry to say. OK, you're now on steel springs, but the compressor now sounds like it's kicking in and out whenever it's left parked. Left to me, I wouldn't have started from here.
If the truth were known, it's very little extra effort, if at all to just replace the suspect pair of bags with new ones as it was to replace them with steel.
I run air suspension on mine and quite frankly it's a good system, although it did let me down once, but I recognised what it was and changed both bags before it could do it again and it hasn't troubled me since.
In your case, I would say that you are going to need a code reader to check that the air system has been properly turned off, not just the dashboard light. And do remember that now you're on steel springs, the "off-road extra height" button doesn't do anything.

It seems my speech needs simplification and my hopes clarification.

I was told the compressor was at fault, a replacement unit would be £600 plus labour and the timeframe not commensurate with getting to work and a cost not attractive.

I know the compressor is still active and had gathered from reading others' posts that fusible link 9 would cut power to the errant unit which is not the case. Have I removed the correct link and if so, how can something drain power with its fuse removed?

I have to disconnect the battery nightly to be able to start in the morning.

I wonder if the compressor was defective or the mechanic looking for a path of least resistance.

Can this be checked without a box?- sorry I don't know the names of relevant devices

If box required, are there equipped forum members that like to earn a bung for aid?

Which source of spares come rated by forum members?

I still recommend you do a parasitic drain test,

A working second hand compressor can be purchased quite cheaply. Or you can get manual inflation valves to use in an emergency.

Your current problem ( do you see what I did there....;)) May be nothing to do with the fact your bags were changed to coil springs.

Regarding getting a nanocom / hawkeye , the you will need to do a search on the LZIR map and see if anyone is local who has one would be kind enough to help.

As for what your original problem was, I have no idea as anything said on that point is speculative at this point.

Have you looked at the Electrical diagram / read the rave manual to define which fuse should be pulled?

Cheers

I may be opening myself up to be shot down here but as you have a) changed to coils and b) removed the fusible link could you not just pop the plastic cover off the compressor and unplug the harnesss connector?
