I've searched, but found nothing helpful, and I'm lusting for a swing away for my hardtop 90 tdi!

Why are the pictures on various 4x4/landy parts site so small!?

So, if you're feeling helpful (and we all love pictures!) please show off your pride and joy! :D

Cheers
Tom

EDIT: These seem like very good value, but it hard to see the quality compared to Mantec etc http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/la...eel-carrier-90110-except-td5-by-bearmach.html

But why do they not provide any detail about it, such as weight or tube thickness...?

The cheaper ones might not open with the door and may have separate lock mechanism so read the descriptions carefully. My mate got one and was well ****ed when he realised that you could only open the back door if you were outside.

Hi. I am a little cautious for that reason.

Some of the pics on various sites have no proper description, and even suggest the picture is only for reference, and the carrier might vary from that shown.

I could ring around, but I'm 'just looking' at this stage.

Cheers

I've got the SEL01 on my 90.

Bought it from WH carriers about 13-years ago but I believe they are the same company and the carrier is certainly identical (it is connected to my side-hinged tailgate).
Mechanically it has been perfect, the powder-coating gave up a few years ago so I had it galvanised.

they are the same firm :)

i like that do you think it would fit on with NATO bumperrettes fitted to the rear cross member?

Only thing is i have a drp down tailgate.........

I dont like the wheel on the bonnet and its currently in the tub attached to the rollbar

Yes, that's what I thought.

Good quality carrier.
The powder-coating wasn't up to much when brand-new (there was bare metal in the hidden corners) and realistically I should have sent it straight back but I applied a little paint and it was ok for many years until I decided enough was enough and had it dipped. I replaced all the bolts with SS many years ago and the grease-nipples need attention a few times a year but that is it.

I don't know if it is still the same but at the time the instructions showed two alternative mounting positons. It could be mounted more or less centrally or more over to the O/S making it easier to get to the door-handle (this is what I did).

Don't know about the bumperettes.
Mine is also ex-MOD but I removed the bumperettes almost immediately and fitted the ones shown in the photo.

They do a version for drop-down tailgates (SEL05A) but I am not so keen on them as the arm is much longer. You could convert your tail side-hinged as I did or if you want to keep it as it is try a Pivlock. I had one of these on my S111 SWB V8 and it was excellent. It works independantly of the door / tailgate so will work with either set-up.

I was not a great fan of the wheel-mounted spare.
It was ok with the XCL's but when I changed to 265/75x16 it was awkward to see over and my wife (who is much shorter) had no chance.

My only real experience of a wheel carrier was the one on my 109 safari 20 years ago.

Very strong as it used to carry a 7.50x16. BUT yes it fastened to one of those toggle fasteners for a tailgate on the door handle side, which meant you had to open the carrier from outside before opening the door.

The real downside was after a few years which included a lot of serious off roading/laning etc the weight of the wheel on the hinged O/S started fatiguing the spot welds on the rear tub, even when part of the weight was supported on the N/S

I also recently met a chap who was shining his nice 90 up to reluctantly sell it, I noted that there was a huge rust hole in the O/S of the otherwise pristine rear cross member. He said it was where a Mantec rear wheel carrier had been bolted to the cross member and that the corrosion was notorious. I may be wrong as this was just his observation.

Personally I would not install a side mounted carrier like that, they seem a good idea at the time, but in the long run may cause all sorts of damage. Remember just how heavy a LR spare wheel is.
